Why are the "pet-friendly" neighborhoods going by the wayside? There are times when I feel horrible for pets only because of the actions their owners take when supposedly caring for them. Unfortunately the pet will never know or understand why they're treated so poorly or even have the understanding that life could be better somewhere else. They love unconditionally so there's little else they are concerned about other than the attention their masters show them.
It's mostly cats and dogs we're dealing with here but there are dozens of other household pets which need our help too. To be fair, my biggest concern is with our dogs. Certain breeds are characteristic to certain behaviors, get to know your breed and it's possible peculiaraties befor you buy one. If it's a mutt I would recommend visting the parents to see how they've turned out. Check for size, are they going to fit within your lifestyle let alone your abode. Are you a couch potato? Then don't get a sheltie or terrier of any kind. If you smoke, quit! Second hand smoke affects animals much more than it does humans.
There are financial concerns also. It's not just going to be food and playtime you need to provide. There are usually premiums to security deposits when you have pets within an apartment setting. Additional insurance requirements may be necessary in a condominium environment too. Then comes the Veterinarean costs, much less than what it takes to keep us healthy but these pets need to be checked from time to time too. Shop around, the costs vary widely, but most importantly go with someone you like and can trust.
If you wish to continue having a home for your pet take the consideration of others to heart. The Health Department frowns upon fecal matter being left where it lies after your walk with Fido. If you think you can fool the neighbors by carrying that little bag with you everywhere you go have at it, but at least change it out every now and then to keep suspicions down. Of the 10 or 12 dogs who like my property for some reason or another I can identify who's who with 99% accuracy and will let their parents know when a "mistake" has occurred. Don't get me wrong I love animals and have no problems with any of them here. It's just when I go on an appointment and have a telltale odor about that I get a little distraught.
In conclusion, take time to get yourself trained about your pet and give youself a little more knowledge along the way. Dogs love to be trained and will do their damnedest to satisfy your commands. Your pets will be much happier and your neighbors will appreciate the responsible tone you have set for them! Please have a fabulous weekend!
