Pet Friendly Neighborhoods on the Wane, Why is That?

By
Real Estate Agent with Florida Supreme Realty SL514814

Why are the "pet-friendly" neighborhoods going by the wayside?  There are times when I feel horrible for pets only because of the actions their owners take when supposedly caring for them.  Unfortunately the pet will never know or understand why they're treated so poorly or even have the understanding that life could be better somewhere else.  They love unconditionally so there's little else they are concerned about other than the attention their masters show them.

It's mostly cats and dogs we're dealing with here but there are dozens of other household pets which need our help too.  To be fair, my biggest concern is with our dogs.  Certain breeds are characteristic to certain behaviors, get to know your breed and it's possible peculiaraties befor you buy one.  If it's a mutt I would recommend visting the parents to see how they've turned out.  Check for size, are they going to fit within your lifestyle let alone your abode.  Are you a couch potato?  Then don't get a sheltie or terrier of any kind.  If you smoke, quit!  Second hand smoke affects animals much more than it does humans.

There are financial concerns also.  It's not just going to be food and playtime you need to provide.  There are usually premiums to security deposits when you have pets within an apartment setting.  Additional insurance requirements may be necessary in a condominium environment too.  Then comes the Veterinarean costs, much less than what it takes to keep us healthy but these pets need to be checked from time to time too.  Shop around, the costs vary widely, but most importantly go with someone you like and can trust.

If you wish to continue having a home for your pet take the consideration of others to heart.  The Health Department frowns upon fecal matter being left where it lies after your walk with Fido.  If you think you can fool the neighbors by carrying that little bag with you everywhere you go have at it, but at least change it out every now and then to keep suspicions down.  Of the 10 or 12 dogs who like my property for some reason or another I can identify who's who with 99% accuracy and will let their parents know when a "mistake" has occurred.  Don't get me wrong I love animals and have no problems with any of them here.  It's just when I go on an appointment and have a telltale odor about that I get a little distraught.

In conclusion, take time to get yourself trained about your pet and give youself a little more knowledge along the way.  Dogs love to be trained and will do their damnedest to satisfy your commands.  Your pets will be much happier and your neighbors will appreciate the responsible tone you have set for them!  Please have a fabulous weekend!

Kevin,

Amen to that!  We do need to train ourselves, and I for one thank all those people who carry the bags on their canine's leashes and pick up after them.  All the best, A

Alexandra, I am impressed by the owner who takes true pride in their pet.  That is one ingredient of that mutual feeling!

Good post on this issue but i'm not finding areas restrictive here...most of it comes from people abandoning pets due to financial circumstances which is so sad.  If people could act responsibly in their lives their wouldn't be such issues but adults are just older kids most times & behave with their pets accordingly.  Hope the message gets out Kevin...best

Wow, he's little there Tagrid but I love the Argyle sweater!

Glad to hear this is not such an issue there for you Ginny.  The first order of business would be to ban the use of the below for pets over let's say 20lbs.  Even then you probably won't be able to hang on when they want to get going!

Great post Kevin,  I think however that people looking for a pet should go to the nearest shelter for one and not buy them from the puppy mills or pet stores.  There are too many animals in these shelters looking for a good home.

Thanks Josh, when I finished putting this one together I was thinking there might be too many.  Then I thought I could've just as easily added 10 more.

Kevin great advice and photos.  Yes far too many animals are mistreated.  Many could use a bit of education before getting a certain pet thus avoiding some of the pitfalls.

Jennifer, common sense should play a big part in this process but so many times it's an impulse that gets the better of many.  Sadly the pet suffers from this sometimes selfish action.

This is a perfect post before Christmas.  Too many purchase live animal gifts and some recipients dont want the responsibility so those pets end up in rescue in Jan or Feb or worse - suffer from neglect!  Hope you and yours have a great one!

I'm in agreement Renee, live gifts other than plants aren't appropriate even with the best of intentions in mind.  It is such a personal decision and should always remain so.  Thank!
