California Carnivores: Little Shop of Horrors in Sebastopol, CA

I remember Little Shop of Horrors as an odd and scary movie, but it was certainly entertaining. OK, maybe warped is a better word to describe it.

California Carnivores plays on that movie, yet they do it in a delightful way. At the road to the entrance, you are greeted by a giant Venus Flytrap. And that pretty much sets up your expectations for what's inside.

Carnivorous plants, as you probably know, are plants that derive some or most of their nutrients from trapping and consuming insects. The Venus Flytrap in Little Shop of Horrors ate more than insects, which makes this place a little spooky.

Dubbed as the "Largest Carnivorous Plant Shop in the United States", California Carnivores is home to plants with names like Bladderworts, Butterworts, Cobras and Sundews. There are plenty of Venus Flytraps as well, just not as big as Audrey II (thankfully), the one in the movie.

Watch your step when you visit this shop, there are snakes and lizards at every turn. They're fake, of course, but some you have to keep an eye on because they look a little too real.

Visiting California Carnivores is definitely an educational experience. All of the different plants have a placard describing how they are "activated" when an unsuspecting insect happens by. As in buh-bye!

Got a pest at home that has been bugging you? Maybe it's time to visit California Carnivores to help take care of that little problem. Just don't be in a hurry ... with 11,000 square feet of plants to explore, you won't want to leave any time soon.

Craig - this isn't your typical nursery, that's for sure. I had a blast hanging out there yesterday.

Peggy - if you are ever in Sonoma County, please give me a call. I'd love to show you California Carnivores or anywhere else you'd like to go. I've never been asked to show someone an insect eating Venus Flytrap before but these days nothing surprises me much :)

Paul - I'm taking my 7 year old Granddaughter the weekend after Thanksgiving. The camera will be in hand for sure! She is a student of karate so I think I'll be safe :)

I tried SO hard to grow a venus fly trap once.... I failed.  I have a brown thumb.  I keep trying and I do have a couple of plants that I have had for years (obviously ones that just won't die).   But that sounds like a great place to visit.  I'm going to have to make sure I hit it if I get that way.

Tammy - water is a wonderful thing when it comes to plants :) Honestly, my house looks like a jungle ... I had to give away a plant that had been topped and was still scraping my 12 foot ceilings. Craigslist "FREE" section is a wonderful thing as well :)

I would love to take my grandkids here for a visit.  Some of our stores in Indiana occasionally sell venus fly traps, but they are usually pretty sickly looking.  So nice to see the different sights across the country!

Pat - I guess these plants go dormant during the winter. I'm being told the best time to see them is in the Spring and Summer. I thought these plants looked pretty good now so I'm sure I'll be amazed when they are more active.
