HOMEOWNER TIP: REFRIGERATOR

The refrigerator is the second greatest user of energy in any home. Some adjustments in how you use this essential appliance can make a real difference in your utility bills.

Thermostat settings should be reviewed. Start by putting a thermometer in the refrigerator to see how cold it's getting. Generally, the best setting for the fridge is 40 degrees (F) and 5 degrees (F) in the freezer. Most people have the settings set lower than necessary, which expends a lot of energy. If you change the settings, wait about 12 hours and check the temperature again.

Take it down a notch

As tempting as it is, don't stand in front of the refrigerator with the door open. Make a mental list of what you need before you open the door. Kids and my husband are notorious for standing and gazing into an open refrigerator. The interior temperature of the refrigerator begins to rise in a very short time, and takes several hours to recover fully once the door is closed.

If possible, let hot food cool a bit before storing it in the fridge. This is not to say that food should be left on the counter for hours without refrigeration, but very hot food can cool somewhat, which will ease the burden of the fridge.

Be sure to vacuum the motor, coils, and exhaust vents regularly. If you have pets in the house, you may have to do this more frequently. Dust, dirt, and pet hair on the coils decrease efficiency, and result in higher energy bills.

If you have a second refrigerator that's rarely used, consider unplugging it. A relatively empty refrigerator costs more than $100 a year to keep cool. If you do unplug a refrigerator, be sure to leave the door ajar so that air can circulate to the interior. Energy Efficient Home

Most importantly, never leave a refrigerator open where kids can climb into it. The door could close and they could easily die inside. If you have a second refrigerator and you are not using it, it might be best to donate it to a family in need, so it will be put to good use.
