THE VALUE OF THE ELDERLY....they traveled before we did

When I used to work at Disneyland years ago, I noticed that they had ticket takers that ranged in age from 25-75 years old. Everyone is kind, courteous, and helpful when admitting you into the Park...I couldn't help seeing the the elderly got more of a joy out of it especially with the young kids coming in...

THE AWE OF IT ALL

They knew how special it would be for a young kid to come into Disneyland and they lend that knowledge to make it extra special. It is a deep and genuine greeting and they contribute to the experience and awe of it all. Parents are grateful too...

CONSULT YOUR LOCAL ELDERLY

Grandparents and great grandparents possess jewels they have discovered and accumulated through-out their lives.....your choice to use....or lose. They have tested beliefs and traveled down some familiar roads we may just need to hear about...

JUST LISTEN....DON'T ARGUE

I recently ran into a man who found his grandmothers diary. In it were stories of the Civil War as told to her by her father and family. They were so fascinating the man interviewed his grandmother and she expounded on some of the "diary" writings. There was so much data that he organized it into a Civil War book....

OH...THOSE RECIPES

Every generation has recipes....secrets that involve eating and the making of different foods and drinks. A very wealthy man I used to work for would sometimes reward his employees with some of his wife's cooking. She was an older Jewish lady from Latvia. She made a thanksgiving one time with everything you'd expect, but spiced and prepared with a different flavor....TO DIE FOR......I had this lady's coffee too and it was coffee I have never had since. Tasty, aromatic, flavorful, and no sweeteners or cream needed or wanted. She took the secret to her grave...

THE WHY AND THE HOW OF LIFE.....often revealed

They know things...lots of things about people, places and things. Patience, understanding and how to keep warm and why its best to let something stew and what to buy and when and how to store it. They know how to appreciate a car, TV, clothes, appliances, personal items and keepsakes and..... keep a good home.

ATE LUNCH, CRACK JOKES.....THERE IS NO WRONG

I recently had a lunch with a group of elderly people (25) I ran into at a tourist outing recently. They invited us to join them and we had meaningful conversation. I was able to crack a few well timed PG rated jokes of which everyone had a hearty laugh....now that they know all about life.....

GET A GLIMPSE OF WHERE YOU ARE HEADING

Well mannered, mild mannered, and full of a wealth of knowledge, if you want an exceptional experience...if you are up to it...visit and interact with the elderly.....

My brother and I are now the senior members of our family. I look forward to jawing with grandchildren and others of that generation. Retirement looks okay. But first I have a few homes to sell to that generation.

I remember once asking an Aunt about the Lindberg trial, we were discussing it in class, she had a whole other take on it, much different from the history books.  She lived it, it gave me a truer version.

My mom will be 98 next Friday.  I'm trying like crazy to get people to come to her birthday party at the nursing home, but that's a tough one!  No one likes visiting a nursing home or an elderly person unless it is family.  There is no family but me at this point.  My mom is intelligent, alert, and has a great sense of humor.  Keep your fingers crossed that I can get a few people to show up.  I'm twisting my friends' arms.

Hi Richie, this post is so full of wisdom.  The elderly have so much to give and are so full of life if we are just willing to be open to them.  My 87 year old mother is bright and full of life and loves geneology.  She has been studying and researching for years.  I love to listen to her.  What a gift!

I miss my Granny!!  She was so full of life and stories.  My daughter is a nurse at a retirement center and loves her "babies".  It's fun to hear her stories of life with them.

Ginevra....they were worthy to be known and loved.....They passed the BATON....now its your turn Ginevra.....to share and tell stories.....best to you dear girl

Glenn...all in good time. Sounds like you have the balance and it is working just fine....Remember, the kids take our everyday words and mannerism and imprint themselves with it. it is the little things that recalled and cherished......good stuff Glenn

Vegas Bob...I sense they traveled great distances and had lots to share.....It appears you absorbed some of the FUN you mentioned....quite well...  Carry on and thanks for sharing

Liz...what value to know what happened. I was asking solders who came back from wars what really happened and it was different than the Media's presentations.....Look at how much we know and how we should prepare ourselves to pass on...Good comment and thank you Liz (and Auntie too)

Gail....carpe diem.....do it! Time waits for no one. Aged wine, cheese and the wilderness is so pleasant and sought after...how much more than in a Human Being...? Give mom a hug and a well done from me...she earned it....

Judith...dear you have a gold mine all too yourself. It will make your inner gems and jewels worth even more when you start sharing your stories, gifts and talents...case in point...highest regards Judith

Tammy....in the end, I hope I am fun for others and have a few things to pass on too. We are all here by invitation by a most magnificent host....I do believe a good way to thank the host is to share the gift of life with others.....thank you

Our elders have learned that not everything needs a full rolling boil, a slow simmer can bring about a much better result usually.  Listening and learning from them can make our lives much more meaningful and easier.

Richie - Many other cultures do a much better job both respecting their "elders" and listening to their sage advice.  In many cultures it's common for the grandparents to live with the family, and that helps to provide a stable foundation for the next generation.

What John wrote above is true.  Our culture tends to discard seniors rather than cherish them.  Unfortunately, that is our "glimpse of where we are heading" unless things change.

Hello Kevin...I like your comment....it captured the post and then some...thank you for visiting and enriching us all....good job

Hello John....America has taken the idea of freedom too far on some subjects like sex and marriage and what you touched upon....essentially not having the parents in the home but in another HOME. I have family that married into a culture where everyone helps out. the grandparents work harder than the parents giving the parents a rest from parenting while still protecting the children. In return, the grandparents are welcomed to be taking care of until they move on.....Without this compassionate GLUE so to speak that binds our souls..our existence...we are reduced to less than human beings....THINK: I remember reading about certain birds that mate for life and when a mate is lost, they mourn for years....elephants take care of their own too....

Eric....Thank GOD that I really wanted a family and committed to that belief.... while raising the kids, I wasn't perfect, but there was always love...genuine charity at work. Now, they pay me back by caring about me and coming to me for counsel...When you do the work....often the reward is not far behind......I wish I would have had the benefit of my fathers and mothers counsel....I had to seek counsel elsewhere.....

LOVE this post Richie!

I wish those in "gubberment" would have asked the elderly who suffered the most for our current freedoms about loaning, borrowing and spending.

I'm sure their answer would have been, "Don't spend what you don't have."
