Yesterday around 4 PM my internet connection went down at my house. I didn’t think it was big deal I just reset my route and left for my evening appointment with a client. When I got home I have two upset children and not so happy wife. What does internet connection means in my household?

My son wasn’t able to play his PS3 or XBOX online games, my daughter could not use Netflix, YouTube or Sprouts app on her iPad (please note she is 2 year old and was most upset with me). My wife had the only evening off this week so she wanted to relax and watch a movie via either DriectTV on demand service or Google TV. On top of that we have Voice over IP service from Vonage so the phones were not working either.
After 30 minutes on hold or talking to automated system I was able to get hold of technical person. After spending 30 minutes with him we got my modem working when I directly plug in my laptop to the modem. After couple of hours I gave up troubleshooting issues with my router and voip device and decided to order Apples Time Machine (affiliated link) and join my family in a friendly game of Monopoly.
This morning I was able to connect all my hard wire network devices with replacing my router with a switch but cannot get my phone system working. I guess phone call to Vonage Customer Service is next.
What would possibly take all of those three devices out?
