How to Get the LEAST from Active Rain!

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Classic Property Management

A thought occurred to me today while I was perusing the latest and greatest from Active Rain.  You see, I have a long list of people that I have subscribed to.  I am constantly looking for more great bloggers to keep track of due to the fact that there is so much to be learned from people here in the Rain!

Anyway, I have come to the realization that there are basically two types of people here in the Rain.  There are the people who genuinely want to learn and share information with their peers, and there are those who are here for "other" reasons (cue dramatic music)...

Reason #1:  They are here basically to use AR as a secondary MLS service, constantly posting listings whenever they get one in the hope of landing a client.

Reason #2:  They are here to post as much mindless, meaningless drivel as they can in order to make themselves climb the Google ladder to its apex.

Reason #3:  They are here to post the same boring inane "market conditions" blogs in order to get easy points and once again, climb the Google ladder.

Now let me explain the above critiques!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reason #1:  Now, please understand that I don't have any problem with people who want to post their listings on Active Rain.  In fact, I think it is a pretty good idea!  What I do have a problem with is the blogger who ONLY posts listings without ever contributing any useful information to the collective knowledge base.  It is my understanding that the purpose of AR is to glean and share information with other Real Estate professionals for the purpose of helping each other out.

Reason #2:  Ah, the drivel slinger...I have come across a few bloggers who seem as if their entire purpose in life is to stab other Rainers in the back!  One person in particular wrote several blogs specifically attacking one individual and actually NAMED that individual.  I am happy to see that their account has since been suspended, but the fact remains that there are guys like that out there!

Reason #3:  Finally, we come to boring inane guy.  In mt recent quest to add to my quality bloggers list, I stumbled across a fellow who only posts "market conditions" blogs for his particular city.  Generally I don't think this is a big deal, but he posts the same thing every few days!  All he has to do is change the numbers up a bit, and hit the "post" button.  As of the writing of this blog, he has posted over 50 entries and received 3 comments total.  Why?  Because its boring!  Shake it up a bit!  We want to see some of your personality shine through the tedium!

Sigh...oh well, at least there are more folks here for the right reasons than the wrong ones!  I will keep addingto my list of awesome bloggers and weeding through the "others".  I heard a quote today that actually applies very well here in the Rain.  "Sometimes, you have to walk through some manure to get to the flowers!"

Whoa...let'm know my man.

I'm a newbie...just starting to learn the dealings and etiquettes of Active Rain...I can't lie though...I'm here to make money as well as learn.

I didn't know that was frowned upon?

Honesty is the best policy.  You know we are all going to 'check out' our own posts to see if we are guilty!  I'm cool on 1 & 2, but 3 is for the critics, I guess!

Jonathan - you are so right.  I'm probably guilty of some of the above.  But, the best part of AR is what we learn from each other.  I have gotten so much wonderful insight from this website and hopefully I'll add some as well.  Thanks for calling it what it is!!

Jason:  I don't think you are in any danger of that!  lol!

Robert:  No!  I am here to further my business as well.  Hopefully that does indeed lead to a masive income some day!

Cory:  I love the point system, and believe me, I love to try to climb the ranks.  I just hate it when someone posts the drivel that gets them thousands of points ahead of those who genuinely care.

Rob:  LOL!  Next time you comment, be sure to bring me an apple!   :)

Nora:  I am sure that I have violated a few of my own rules too.  However, I am trying to better myself as I go along!  You are on my list of awesome bloggers and I have learned a wealth of information from you.

Hey, Jon!  Pretty sure I'm goofy enough not to have to worry about ever being guilty of any on your list.  :o)  (But those are pet peeves of mine as well!)

Jonathan, let me start off first saying, I apologize if I have misread. I post a combination of posts for the active rain community and posts for my real estate community (localism) I probably post more for the localism group. These posts don't get get comments from within the community and I know will never be featured and I am OK with that. I just don't see the problem with focusing mostly on the real estate community and less on the active rain community. (This is where I think I may be misreading you.)

As for the ActiveRain community. I thoroughly enjoy it and have learned much from it. I don't take it for granted. I have loads of respect from many of the members of it.

Jonathan - I try to comment on everyone's blogs that comes to my blogs! But you are so right, there are some blogs that are just so boring that I just can't do it! I usually put these people on a watch list for one month hoping they get the idea of blogging and I can make a comment on something of theirs. But, if all they post is listings and market conditions, I just can't!

Excellent post, I am new to the site and taking my time before jumping into blogging.

As I look around and read, I see that too many people are using it as an mls.

I plan to develop my thoughts fully before posting.

Thanks again for the post.
