Former President George W. Bush was on the Leno program last night and one of the comments Leno made to President Bush was "Thanks for 8 years of material." It was actually said with respect and Bush responsded with appropriate humor.
This was a very good interview with the usual personality type of questions that Leno asks of guests. The former presidents responses were quicky, witty and often self deprecating bringing a lot of laughs. Leno did ask a few "tough questions" about Katrina, why bin Laden is still not captured, what did he regret, etc. Bush answered these questions candidly.
One thing very obvious and very heartwarming was the respect shown the ex-president not only by Leno but by the audience as well. They cheered and applauded his comments. And, when Bush was introduced and entered the stage area they stood and applauded in respect. When Bush gave his response to why he does not comment on Obama there was another loud round of applause.
One thing that is obvious from this and other interviews is that Bush is certainly content and even happy to be out of the limelight, or the crosshairs, making few public appearances other than to greet returning troops or, after the Ft Hood shooting to visit the survivors, but always low key with little fanfare.
I have seen several of the interviews, including Matt Lauer's, Bill O'Reilly's and parts of others and this one was certainly the most enjoyable and respectful. Hope you got to see it. Maybe it will be available on youtube or the NBC website.
