When I was a child my Dad insisted that I practice common courtesy to others. He usually would say things like "It doesn't cost you anything to smile at a stranger!" or "It doesn't cost you a thing to say Thank You!" or "It doesn't cost anything to be polite!" etc. etc.
This past week on a sunny afternoon while I hurried to the Bank's door I caught the eye of an older lady headed in the same direction. We both smiled at each other and as I approached the door I held it for her. When we entered the Bank's vestibule she stopped and emphatically said "Thank You!" which prompted a brief but very pleasant conversation between two complete strangers. We learned we live within a few blocks of each other and have some common interests. I walked away thinking of my Dad's simple rules of common courtesy and how they just added a sincere smile on my face and on my new friend's face.
