The passing of a great friend - GOOG411 may you rest in peace

1-800-Goog411 was one of my favorite technology tools of the past three years and now it has ceased to exist.

Goog411 was laid to rest on November 12, 2010 and will remain in our memories and slowly morph into Geek Mythology.  Goog411 was a tremendous free service in which you could call 1-800-Goog411 and speak to the mighty Geek God who would mystically connect you to the business you were searching for with no fee or human interaction.

Goog411 RIP

As the cell phone carriers battle over 3G and 4G definitions, it only makes sense to give Google the credit they deserve and refer to the world as we know it today in terms of Google.  For example, in the beginning of time, it is commonly referred to as BC.  After that, we started keeping track of time via AD (i.e. 1950 AD).  As technology caught on and Google became the mainstay, I had to start thinking of things differently in terms of BG (Before Google).

Then new generations of Google were created.

  • G1 = Google;
  • G2 = Goog411;
  • G3 = Gmail;
  • G4 = When Google bought YouTube;
  • G5 = Google Earth;
  • G6 = Google Docs;
  • G7 = Google Voice;
  • G Spot = This is still under development at Google Labs!

I look forward to what Google has to deliver to get me excited next with new ways to embrace technology!

Wow I had heard great things about Goog411 but must admit I never used it.  Do you know why it has been laid to rest?

It is sad to see GOOG411 pass along! It was always so helpful. Google is always coming up with very useful tools, so hopefully they may find a even better replacement!

I help brokers build businesses they love.

I for one am devastated. I had Goog411 stored in the bluetooth in my car and used it almost every day. Now they want me to use the bb app to to look it up...not good for road safety in my area!

The word from Google via http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google%20Mobile/thread?tid=758528f59d7e5b03&hl=en is:

"Since then, we’ve made a lot of progress with voice recognition services for smartphones such as Voice Search, Voice Actions, Voice Input. So now we are focusing our resources on providing even greater innovation in these mobile applications.

Though GOOG-411 has certainly laid an important foundation for what’s to come, we want to prioritize and invest in future technologies. So on November 12, 2010, we’re retiring GOOG-411 for good."

Dang I missed it!  I always intended to call but never did and now its gone.  Sounds like a great tool.  I better start paying attention.  Of course I don't have to go through goog411 withdrawal right now either.  I do use the voice recognition function on my iphone google app -- it's pretty cool.

Horrors!

I didn't use it every day (obviously, since I didn't know it was gone until now) but it was invaluable when you needed it. Sorry to see you go, Goog.

With the voice recognition in the Android phones, I will probably survive the passing of Goog-411 too.  I know I sure like being able to use voice commands to text.  My cell phone minutes have dropped significantly as a result and therefore so has my cell bill.  Once again, thanks Google.
