How Much Space Do You Really Need?

As "McMansions" continue to pop up all over the country, I am wondering why people keep buying them. More and more when I visit people, I find that they have one or more rooms that they never use. If I inquire about a closed room as they are showing off their home, they say something like "Oh, that's the junk room". We keep meaning to do something withit but we just store stuff in there." I think this is yet another illustration of our "stuff" owning us rather than the other way around.

In the 1950's the average home had a family of four in a two bedroom, one bath, one car garage home. Most of us who grew up in those homes did not fewel crowded at all. The houses had larger yards and the cars stayed in the garage. We spent more time in the yard and had less stuff to store.

Some buyers seem to be interested in downsizing as their fanilies grow older and children move away. Others are motivated by the desire to simplfy their lifestyle and decrease their expenses. As the cost of energy increases and the effects of continuing climate change cause more extreme weather priorities seem to be changing. I for one, would not mind selling more, smaller houses for less money.
