Noccalula Falls were originally known as Black Creek Falls. Living near the Black Creek Falls was Noccalula, the daughter of the area Indian Chief. Her father promised her hand to the rich Chief of the neighboring tribe in trade for multiple items. She pleaded with her father not to promise her to the chief because her heart belonged to a young warrior in her own tribe. Her father would not listen, and Noccalula's young lover was driven away from the tribe.

Everyone was enjoying the festivities on Noccalula's wedding day when she slipped away and went to the waterfall and jumped. The Indian Chief was so heartbroken from the death of his daughter he named the falls after her.
