How do you quantify the time and expense of blogging?

I am a Realtor in Boise, Idaho and a Certified EPRO Trainer.  I love using technology in my real estate business that benefits both me and my clients.  One tool I spend a lot of time on is Blogging.  However, blogging is unique to quantify results with since it is a combination of:

  • research time (not a direct reimbursable expense;
  • education (pays dividends but not until some unpredictable time in the future if you apply what you learn);
  • networking (depends on the image you portray will impact your results)
  • socializing (can lead to networking but it is a stretch);
  • SEO optimization (you can pay for ad words or use key words in your blog);
  • Refining your skills (get your thoughts together and edit them before you just blurt them out in front of a potential client);

The best advice I can share with someone is to think of blogging using a business plan approach.
  • Establish short term, medium term and long term goals of your blog;
  • No one had the time to blog laying on their desk, so determine something you do for 15 minutes to an hour a day that offers no return on your time and substitute that wasted time with time blogging!
  • Think of measurable outcomes for your blog.  If it is for education, why are you reading and commenting on recipes and jokes?
  • If you watch TV, buy a laptop and blog during commercials (that is pretty much "free time" out of currently "wasted time".  For example, if you watch "The Biggest Looser" how does that help your real estate career?  If you watch the same show and read blogs and post comments about your community - you might become the Biggest Gainer.
  • Think of the time reading blogs like you would reading business development books and read the right books, not romance novels or travel books unless that too is for research.
We have to enjoy life while trying to waste as little of it as possible.  However, it isn't all about maximizing every thing we do 24/7/365.  Otherwise, we would end up considering the following:
  • wearing Depends so we only had to go to the bathroom once a day (maybe when we shower);
  • we would pour coffee straight into the toilet since it is a diuretic;
  • we would quit making our beds since we will just mess them up again tonight;
  • we could have the dentist extract all or teeth and give us dentures so we could save time flossing and brushing three times a day;
  • Quit playing Farmville or MafiaWars on Facebook and spend that time wisely blogging;
  • We would quite hunting and fishing since it is generally cheaper to buy your meat at the store;
  • We would quit buying diamonds and start buying Cubics since people can't see the difference;
  • We would quite investing for our future since we wouldn't have one!
In summary, blogging is an exercise.  With any exercise program, you don't do it once and expect to see measurable results.  Many people get excited about the possibility, sign up for a health club plan, and don't stick to their plan.  If you can hold yourself accountable, you will succeed!

A moving experience!

I don't even attempt to quantify the time.  I just do it, and enjoy it and let the chips fall where they may.

Jim: Excellent, excellent post--and funny too! I find that with Blogging, I watch much less TV, even though my TV may be running, I rarely even look up!.. So I guess you could say that I have replaced TV watching with Blogging and I love it!

Jim...You are hilarious!  My Mom left some of her Depends here...good thing I didn't throw them away, lol.  I need to be in the "zone" to blog.  I really enjoy reading and learning from others.  The research for market reports is what takes me a bit of time.  I now print them all out and do the reports when it's convenient...it's a nice break in the monotony of the boring posts we all must do!

Does this mean I can quit making my bed?   Pretty please?

@Alan, I have a lender that color codes her calendar appointments based on if the appointment is prospecting, maintaining, or a money producing event to make sure she stays balanced.

@Paula, I don't watch hardly any TV either.  I do listen to YouTube in the background and occasionally have a show playing in a separate window on my computer if it is really good.

@Elizabeth, I am thinking about posting the market reports on my company's blog page to differentiate it from my own.  I started doing that on my Facebook account so people know the data I post on it is industry specific and not me trying to sell my listings.  That way, I get other agents to join my fan page too and my data is shared on their pages.  PS Yes, you can quit making your bed but keep the Depends on through the night just to be sure (grin).

As you say, it's an exercise thing.  Gotta get my fingers their exercise.

I learned so much in this post that I'd pour a fifth of whiskey on your grave (may it be many years from now).  Hope you don't mind if I go ahead and pass it through a middle man first!

@Erby, I am glad you learned something from my post today so it wasn't a waste of your time here on Active Rain.  I am pondering the idea of passing the fifth of whiskey through the middle man first - I guess all I can say to that is . . . It Depends. LOL

Jim -

You a a funny guy.  You've given good advice here....both in the post and your comments.

I also watch almost all of my TV right here on the other side of my screen....or on the other monitor on the upper level of my desk.  In fact, I watch most of my football there, too.

Football doesn't count as TV time does it?  I was watching Boise State yesterday....great to see orange on that blue field.  I'm  hoping for Auburn to lose and Oregon to meet the Broncos in the BCS championship.

I won't be watching that on my monitor.

Great post Jim, I am working daily to get up to speed on AR and blogging in general and I seem to be picking up speed each day.  It's funny how so many of us have given up some of our TV time to blog.   I wholeheartedly agree with Jim Hale's comment - Broncos vsDuck in the BCS Championship game is a big screen only event, unless you are lucky enough to be there in person!

@Jim, I would be honored to watch BSU play Oregon for the BCS Championship.  I have gotten to know my way around Glendale thanks to attending two Fiesta Bowls there rooting on the Broncos.  I remember the Oklahoma Sooners calling us "Noise Boise".  The TCU game was great too.  I hope when the BCS rankings come out we will "hop over the horned frogs" yet again.

@Charles, thanks for visiting.  I have been reading some of your blogs too.  Good stuff.

@Keith, I think I need to start buying my tickets on Southwest for a few of the Bowl Games.  So far ESPN is saying we are destined for the Rose Bowl, but keep in mind ESPN also called for Hawaii to upset BSU and the final score told a much different story with BSU dominating Hawaii 42-7.  It is really fun watching Boise stand behind the Broncos!

I quit making my bed a LONG time ago for just that reason.

As cliche as it is, I really DO learn a lot from AR so I would consider that alone a big return on my time even if it didn't bring in any business...
