It's not just booklovers who find their way to the Written Words Bookstore in the White Hills Shopping Center in Shelton, CT - although there is much to delight readers of all descriptions here in this light-filled shop filled with books, calendars and other objects dear to readers' hearts.
Can't find the book you want? Dorothy Sim-Broder, owner, will happily order it for you and call when it arrives. Which, in my case, was so quick that it didn't seem there was enough time elapsed without a "Scottie, beam me up" machine.
Depending on the day (or evening), you'll find knitters cozily chatting in the generous seating area while they work on their various projects, a group working on learning the intricacies of the Chinese language, or an audience eagerly waiting to hear a favorite author speak about a newly released book.
Perhaps it's the Food & Friends Club that will intrigue you, or the monthly book group, where regulars meet to discuss and gain insight into their latest book.
Dorothy creates a wonderful sense of community here. She has set up ongoing partnerships with the Huntington Cafe to conduct poetry evenings, and with the Shelton libraries to share fun and interesting activities that bring readers of all ages together to enjoy books and other things literary. The next upcoming event, scheduled for November 26 & 27 (the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving), is called Shop & Pop. All day, on both these days, Dorothy will generously donate 10% of proceeds from full-priced books sold, to benefit the Shelton libraries.
The "Pop" portion of "Shop & Pop" refers to the opportunity customers will have to win prizes donated by area businesses - by popping a balloon to reveal a prize.
Friends of the Shelton Libraries, a volunteer organization that helps with library fundraising, will be on hand to answer any questions customers may have about Shelton's libraries (both the Plumb Memorial Library and the Huntington Branch Library).
