Speechless Sunday - How Can a Picture Make Noise?

Downy Woodpecker in Noblesville

Very soon, I hope to get back to writing some posts with some substance, but for now, I will have to settle for what time will allow.

That said, what better to post for ‘Speechless Sunday’ (or maybe Silent Saturday would have been more apropos)  than a picture that makes noise and lots of it??  Go ahead look at this picture of what I think is a female Downy Woodpecker and tell me you do not hear her rat-a-tat-tat as she pecks away in search of lunch?  It is one of those pictures  impossible to view and turn off the volume!!  Taken around 11:00 this morning in my yard in Noblesville, Indiana.

Pat, I just heard a couple of woodpeckers pecking away at a house I was at yesterday and I LOVE the sound they make! Of course, I didn't stay that long...who knows how I would feel if I had to listen to that sound for hours on end. :)

Pat, I look and listen to these birds and get a headache just thinking about it!  I love 'em and actually like the sound they make!

Sharon--I never thought about that---sort of like what they are now discovering with football players getting banged around so much?

Joan--I am sure you meant to say winter---and I cannot believe it either!!

Leilani--I love it too and I will bet that over time you sort of get used to it and do not even notice it.  Seems like the woodpeckers only stop in occasionally a few times a year in my neck of the woods, so I cannot get enough!

Kathy--And as Sharon also mentioned, it does seem like they should get headaches!!

At one point the sound of woodpeckers set my teeth on edge.  We had a magnificent new house on the market and I held open houses on most weekends.  This home with a brick and stucco facade was apparently the chosen dinner spot for one or more woodpecker(s).  More than once we found holes in the decorative stucco around the arch in front.  No sooner would one be patched than the next meal was being served.  I finally heard the darn thing pecking away during an open house.  I ran outside like a madwoman.  Totally unprepared, I started clapping loudly and the bird finally flew away.

We have so many woodpeckers here in AZ - they love our tin furnace spouts. I didn't think that the female of the bird species were so colorful, so I looked it up - only the male of this species has a red spot on it's head.

Geri---First I have to say I am mortified.  I posted this before checking the spelling on 'apropos'.  I thought , 'Please don't let Geri see it until I can get that corrected!'  But sure enough, you had already commented.  I know you saw my ridiculous spelling!!  Yikes!!

Now to your comment....So glad you were able to chase the woodpecker away by clapping your hands!  My home is brick and cedar and they have never attacked it--only the trees.

Juli--I think the males and females look the same all but the red spot.  I did not see a red spot on this one, so assumed it was female---but my eyes may be deceiving me!  Had no idea they would peck on metal!!

Diane--Sounds as if you enjoy them as I do!

I have never had a woodpecker, so it would be very strange.    Nice photo Pat!

Pat,

I had no idea from your title, but that is a good one. I wake up to the sound of woodpeckers many mornings. :)

I heard this one loud and clear ;-O I also started laughing at your narrative in a "Speechless" post. I have never been able to do it either! Hope you have a great Thanksgiving!

Joan--I wonder if they just do not visit Colorado?

Tony and Darcy--Can't take all of the credit.  My husband feeds the birds and also snaps the photos.

Steve--Probably more pleasant than a cock-a-doodle-doo?

Russell--It is tough, isn't it?  Happy holiday to you too!!  Haven't started cooking yet, but shopping done!

Hi Pat... I love woodpeckers.  I think they are attractive looking birds and while I don't like the damage they do, I do like a bit of percussion in my day!  :-)

Steve--I have led a very sheltered life.  I thought they only pecked on trees.  I have learned a lot form the comments.  I had no idea they could b so distructive.  They are beautiful.

Pat, While viewing you great photo I thought the sound was coming from my backyard woodpecker.  Mine pecks on the house as well as trees and I have tried almost everything to get rid of it.

Some of the woodpeckers around here grow so large and have colors on them.  Good shot!

I'm surprised this one is so low to the ground and you got it's picture! Mine usually head for the top and go rat-ta-tat-tat all day long. I do find them to be quite facinating. And on the level of a post having substance, you did well!

Don--I guess I didn't know how lucky I was.  They only peck on trees here!!

Debra--These are pretty large.  All are variations of black, white and red on their heads.

Patricia--Totally unexpected, but I guess a post on woodpeckers can totally be related to houses---sort of like termites are! :-)
