Rake In or Rake Out

Sand trapWhile walking a large track of land last week I noticed a peculiar object sitting up right next to the sand trap on the 12th hole at Campbell's Scottish Highlands golf course. The object had a long stick with a bunch of teeth on it sitting straight up on the outside of the bunker. I was a little taken back as my golf ball was lying up against it.

I was ticked off because I would have been better off if my ball was in the sand trap as opposed to sitting deep in the rough just next to the trap and my feet were well above the ball while standing in the trap. I had to use a much less lofted club to make sure I could make contact with the ball. I needed a 9 iron but had to use my 3 iron to try and advance it forward.

I am sure all you golf nuts will say why did I end up there in the first place. I did because I hit a bad shot, there I admit it. LOL

So, my question is should you leave the sand trap rake in or out of the bunker? I always try and leave it in.

Chris, LOL I knew better after I hit the submit button. You crack me up. I'd love to play against Jason and Marc. Those "two average Joe's".

George, no like the whooping you took against the Detroit Tigers and how you lost 2 of 3 to the lowly Devil Rays. :-)

This is in Keene, NH at The Brettwood Country Club between the 7th and 8th hole on the south course. They have a bunch of these on their 36 hole layout. One of my favorite courses to play in NH.

Hi Jay,

You know I never really gave this much thought.  I usually leave the rake out after stepping out to rake the sand.

I got this from the http://www.pga.com/play/golf-etiquette.cfm

  • Bring a rake into the bunker with you -- remembering that you should always enter the bunker from the low side at a point nearest to the ball
    • Whenever possible, avoid walking on the steep face of a bunker
    • After hitting your shot, rake the area you played from, as well as all your footprints and any others within reach
    • Rakes should be left--either in or nearby the bunker

    I hope this helps.

Jay-Suzanne did great in her comment above.  I always leave them INSIDE the trap because then a golfer would never complain that his ball hit the rake and was deflected into the sand trap.  If the rake is in the trap then the ball obviously was destined for the trap and there should be no excuses.  There are a few courses here in Hawaii that put stickers on the rakes that say "Please leave the rake in the sand trap".  Aloha,

Thanks Suzanne, I appreciate you taking the time to look this up. Nearby is ok if it is away from the normal flow of the fairway.

Dave, great minds think alike. I have played on courses where the rake is attached to the golf cart. I lik eit that way. Except when I forget to grab it off the cart. Yikes.
