I am a real estate broker in Boise, Idaho that is always trying to better understand social media. It provides great benefits to me. My getting potential clients to know the morals and ethics I live my life by, it makes it easier for me to convert prospects to clients. I have used sources like LinkedIn and Facebook and Twitter to expand my reach and help with my SEO for my website.
I typically select some sites not to use such as FourSquare, Facebook Places, and Google's Latitude since I don't always want people to know where I am 24/7/365. I don't live a wild and crazy life that I am trying to hide; however, would my client be upset that FourSquare shows me sitting at a bar instead of answering their call? Four Square won't tell them it is a possible business meeting with a client or if I am out getting drunk!
Many of my friends are LDS and since they take the concept of Sunday being a day of rest seriously, they typically don't even go to places of business on Sunday since that causes other people to work which is in essence sacrilegious. If they used geo-fencing software like FourSquare, Place, Lattitude; they would quickly know that I am don't subscribe to the same concepts since I do a lot of shopping and running around on Sundays.
My cousin taught me about Google's Latitude program that we used when we were driving to a wedding in separate cars. It was really cool since we could tell how far ahead or behind we were the whole way. I forgot to disable the feature and later he asked me what I was doing in Denver. I am glad he noticed and not someone interested in my cars or my house or my kids who were home in Boise!
I have learned that posting photos of children online is not very smart sometimes, yet what is to stop my kids friends from posting photos and "tagging" my kids in the photo?

I know if I was a stalker, prowler, etc., I would take every class I could on social media since human beings these days love to provide TMI about their personal lives. I recommend that you read a weeks worth of your posts and see what "patterns" you tell about yourself. (i.e. every AM you post about the news saying you better run to the office about the same time; you hint at having the kids come home at 3:30 from school, you talk about the impact of not let the puppy out cause there is no one home, you talk about how dark it is on your street at night, etc.
If I wanted to stalk you, I might have found out you (or one of your friends) are a single mom, that you leave for work at 7:30 after sending your two girls to school and that you can't make it home for lunch on Thursdays! With the high price of gas and the economy being in the toilet, even the crooks are turning to technology to maximize their yields!
