Here's An Easy Way To Make $40

Girl in prison clothesA friend of our just emailed us a story that we thought we should share with you.  A fellow was cashing out at his favourite store and noticed a $40 cash back charge on his bill.  He brought it to the attention of the cashier that begged his forgiveness, it was a mistake.  (so she said)

After a lot of rig-a-my-roll, his bill had to be cancelled and everything had to be rung in again.

Check you bills before leaving the cashier, it is easy for a cashier to add $10/$20 etc. cash back, that you may not even notice.

It's sad to think that this could happen, but $10 here and $40 there could add up to a tidy sum for the cashier and most people wouldn't even know.

That is crazy, but you are right...some people would not even notice in this busy time of the year until it was too late.  There are several stores that require you to initial the receipt showing that you received the cash back...now I think that I know why!  How else could they prove that you received it?

Al and Peggy I had no idea that this sort of thing was going on.  I guess I better start checking my receipts.

Al & Peggy, there are so many shady characters these days we have to keep a very close eye on our pockets.  It may have been a 'mistake', but I doubt it.

Thanks for sharing.

WOW!   I never ask for cash back so that would never be a problem here, but that is so easy that it's crazy!  Thanks for sharing....

Very scary.  Something strange happened to me this week.  I bought a few things at Home Depot and the young male cashier asked me if I would like to buy some paper yard bags.  I asked how much they were and he said $1.99 for a pack of 5.  I said OK give me two packs.

I just happened to check my bill and noticed he charged me for 3 packs.  I asked him how many he had put in the cart, 2 or 3.  He said 2 and I told him he charged me for 3.

Oh sorry he said.  So I said just give me another pack cuz I didn't want to go through the hassle of getting a refund for $1.99.

Anyway again, maybe an honest mistake.  He can't get rich off $1.99 bags.  Or can he?

Hi Al & Peggy, a lifetime ago I worked in loss prevention, this is a very common scam, has been around for years. Always watch when they are ringing you out and check those receipts!

Al and Peggy - I assume that the person used a debit card.  People need to be very careful using debit cards.

Hey A & P, checking the receipt is always a good thing, and if there's a problem, get it addresses immediately. My wife has gone back to the store for overcharges or shortages, but trying to get cash back after the fact would be almost impossible.

Very good tip you 2.  My hubby laughs at me but I always check the receipts to make sure there aren't any over-charges.

Al and Peggy, Very not cool on the cashier's part.  I tend to watch the register and the receipts, especially when the price "feels" high when we're done.  Sometime I find a double charge, sometimes I realize they missed something and have to swing by customer service to get the charge added.

Damon, its holiday time and the devious just get more creative. Be careful!

Ingrid where there is one, there are more, so watch your money!

Absolutely Rich, we didn't know it was that easy for them. We have been in a rush ourselves and don't check the bill!

For sure John, but if it is happening at one store, it is bound to be happening at others.

That's a good idea Karen, to initial for cash back.

You're welcome Dawn, we are just as guilty.

Yes, Wanda, spread the word and stop these criminals in their tracks.

We didn't either George, but guess it is pretty easy for the cashier to just tack on a few bucks and the customer would never notice.

Rachell, the only thing that made us suspect was, we always thought the cashiers ASKED you if you want cash back.

We never ask for cash back either Dagny, but guess the cashier just thought they would help themselves.

Interesting Jenny, you know its the small amounts no one notices, so yes, they can get rich on the small items.

Will be now for sure Andrea. Never even occurred to us someone would or could do such a thing.

Actually Marc, think it was a Discovery card and that was another frustrating thing, because they would have been charged interest for a cash advance!

Yes Ed, your wife is a smart cookie, but cash would change the scenario. Great way for the cashier to get a pay raise don't you think?

You have to Anita, it could be an innocent mistake, but way pay for it?

Yes that is true BLiz, the error could be on either side. We were just not comfortable with the idea that the cashier can just go in a do a cash back so easily.

That is scary, I always check, just yesterday I went back to the store for a $5 refund she did not scan my coupon and apply. On the other hand my 16 year old son, who works in the family pizzeria, has returned money when someone overpays or drops their money. The other day he bought lunch in school and the cashier gave him too much back, and he told her and returned it to her!
