Outsmarting New Jersey Deer on Your Thanksgiving Treks

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty - Atlantic Shore

If you’re travelling this Thanksgiving weekend, be safe.  Remember here in New Jersey, like everywhere, deer are on the move!  So I’ve found some driving tips for avoiding a collision with a deer.  I also threw in a little information about Jersey deer.

Be aware of your surroundings, especially around dusk and dawn.  Jersey deer are either going out to the club (dusk) or returning home from the club (dawn).

Animal Warning (SXC Kriss Szkurlatowski) Drive at a safe speed, especially in areas with deer warning signs. These signs are strategically placed in areas known to be frequented by wildlife.  And New Jersey deer are smart, they don’t want to deal with NJ State Police either, especially on a jaywalking complaint.

New York (sxc)If you do come across a deer, firmly apply your brakes.  Do not to slam on them or swerve into another lane. While deer collisions are extremely dangerous, drivers losing control of their car to avoid them can be just as deadly.  And again these are Jersey deer, they’ll think it’s a game.

Don’t depend on those ultra-sonic whistles.  Studies have shown them to be largely ineffective at minimizing accidents and Jersey deer say those whistles at 80mph on the Garden State Parkway make for a catchy tune!

Should you see a deer getting ready to cross the road or one that is already in the middle of it, loudly honk your vehicle’s horn. This scares most deer and they’ll quickly make their way back into the woods.  Though I don’t think it works on Jersey deer…they’re tough and they’ve got attitude!

There were plenty of dead deer on the highways on my way to the East coast. Be careful out there.

Careful is right!!!

Cute post, and a little bit of sarcasm in there???    I heard that you should slam on your brakes, then let up just before impact - so your hood and bumper come back up ....   otherwise the deer goes right over your lowered hood and into your windshield - perhaps killing you!

Yes, those poor deer can surely create havoc.  Robin and hubby were traveling on the interstate at dusk from visiting a daughter.  Out of no where they were slammed by a hapless deer.  Quite a bit of damage to the truck but fortunately they are fine.  They were able to get the truck the rest of the way home but Mike will have to do without it for awhile while it's in the truck hospital.

I have one of those signs next to my driveway entrance...there are plenty of deer in my neighborhood.  We have to be very careful early in the morning and at dusk.  It's not just on the main roadways that you need to be careful.

Laura...Great tips.  I honk my horn and flash my light rapidly.  Even if the deer is not on the road, the honking and flashing will get the deer to realize that the lights mean danger.

Morning Laura, reminds me of what they say in Maine about moose...if you see what looks like a picket fence in the road...be stopping QUICK...the picket fence is moose legs in the headlights..

Have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving.

I still imagine that some day one of the antlered creatures that sometimes frequent our backyard will find their way to the rec room by charging the patio doors....good reason not to clean the patio door windows...all the best for the holiday !

Got a lot of those deer in the road here in Kentucky too!

At 80 MPH, you're outrunning your sonic whistle anyway.  They won't hear it until you hit them.

Is Harry here???

Sharon - They built the Parkway surrounded by woods...and at 80 mph...YIKES!

William - On our busy roads and with crazy NJ drivers, honking and flashing might get you some interesting had signals from other drivers!

Rene - I'd hate to have to deal with something that size!

There are so many deer that I use them as directionals when giving clients directions to my open house. " yea make a left at the third deer. The one with one antler slightly larger than the other."

Jeremy - I am cracking up at that post right now.  Unfortunately, I have already clipped two deer this season.  Nothing to major, but you really have to be careful during their mating season.

Irene - Deer are kind of frisky.  I read yesterday that a deer tried to join a 5K Thanksgiving Day race in north Jersey and knocked a young girl over!  Both deer and girl were OK!  LOL
