Things To Do In Chicago - Wreathing Of The Art Institute Lions
The Wreathing of the Art Institute Lions is a long-standing Chicago tradition. Each year the two bronze lions that stand regally at the entrance of Chicago's Art Institute are adorned in their holiday finery. Usually their holiday "attire" consists of the familiar green wreathes accented with bright red bows.
This year, the wreathes will be green but in a different way. The lions are going solar. Yes, solar-powered wreathes! The new wreathes were created by Stephanie and Bruce Tharp. They will be made up of 2,011 spheres, (for the new year), in several shades of red and will cast a festive glow each night. Inside each sphere will be note containing "a wish for the world in 2011" written by Chicago-area schoolchildren.
You can watch the lions get all spiffied up for the season on the day after Thanksgiving, this coming Friday, November 26th, beginning at 10:00 am. After the wreath ceremony, there will be a performance by Hubbard Street 2 and a workshop on wreath-making. The Art Institute is located at 111 S. Michigan Avenue, (Michigan Avenue between Jackson and Monroe).
