Marina Shores Aims To Rezone Wetlands for Pier Expansion
The following was received by Cape Story By The Sea's Civic Association from a concerned resident. The Planning Department has verified the information provided.
There is sign posted indicating a December 20, 2010 (right before Christmas) Wetlands Board meeting to:
- Add 48 boat slips to Marina Shores
- Establish a commercial pier along the river all the way down to Wake Forest Street, starting at the Marina Shores parking lot
- Relocate the existing boat channel closer to Bay Island to so the new commercial pier will fit all of the new boats
- Destroy 1220 sf of wetlands to create a barge inlet to serve a dredge spoil site (long-term)
- Rezone the property from residential to commercial.
This photo shows the project area.
The proposed floating docks would be placed from this spot, to the boats on the right in the background below.
The meeting is at City Hall on December 20. For more information, call 385-8246.
Though hard to read, here is a link to the Marina's plans, as submitted to the City of Virginia Beach, on Cape Story By The Sea's website.
My plans are to voice my opposition if there is an attempt to rezone residential property to commercial zoning. Though this land is not appropriate for homes, this wetland area should be protected. The storm of November 2009 (Tropical Storm Ida's strong Northeaster) again showed how prone to flooding this area is. I manage rental homes in both Long Creek Cove at Marina Shores as well as in Cape Story By The Sea, including a home at the end of Sandalwood Road that saw 3+ feet of tidal water in its garage several times last Fall.
Please feel free to comment below in favor or against this proposed project.
