Mid boom guy here. I was born in 1950's although I look much younger I know. I grew up listening to the Beach Boys. You may recall one of their hits that said 'catch a wave and you're sitting on top of the world'.
Well it happened this morning. I was on the sofa, coffee on the left, laptop in lap, plate on the right with toasted homemade bread, organic cherry jam on top. This is the good life I'm living after all. I was of course looking over blogs. That is when the wave hit as it does somewhere along the way every Holiday season. I always know when it hits. It comes over me from the top of my head, down into my heart and soul through to the tips of my toes. It is the Holiday Spirit like a wave. It will carry me a long way, way past January 1, 2011 well into the new year heart over flowing.
I'm a kind and caring person yet I think unusual thoughts when the wave hits me. Thoughts like, thanks for the great ride, this is a great life! Thoughts like, 'I'm sure glad that bout with appendicitis in 1962 didn't take my Dad like it threatened to'. The Salvation Army brought us gifts that year. I was not yet five years old, next to the youngest of six kids. We had little except each other and we learned the meaning of family there and then. I get thankful all over again that I have all my siblings still with me in this life and how much I love them. My older sister now widowed, the member of a club she did not want to join. She smiles and triumphs in her way. My brother that survived cancer in his early twenties will be 55 in the summer, now a grandfather. My own daughters now 24 were born prematurely in 1986, both well and happy. There are so many more miracles. Miracles still happen. Have you celebrated in gratitude those miracles unique to your family and friends? Have you caught the wave?
I see things differently too because of the wave. It's as though there is a lens of compassion over my glasses. I take a little more time to listen to the needs of others and act. Take heart. Help the struggling, ease some else's burden. I see that those that need me are not here by coincidence. It's a wave of gratitude and a wave of opportunity.
Catch a wave and you'll be sitting on top of the world.
Happy Holidays friends.
