Being Thankful

Yesterday I got an email from my closest girlfriend in Edmonton that her Condo Building had a major fire on the 16th floor and they had all been evacuated. This is a large building with many residents. They are all displaced and it's Grey Cup weekend in Edmonton. She managed to find a place to stay for three nights and her and her significant other will move in with her mother until this is all settled.

I talked to her last night and very early this morning. She said " No one died, everyone got out, I didn't even think of my belongings or my artwork ( she is an artist) .  She knows it will be a long haul to work everything out but she said she will take it one day at a time.

She & I have been friends for almost 20 years now. Listening to her, I thought, wow, in the face of sudden, unexpected negative change would we all be so gracious?

Lori is a great human being with a wonderful heart ant the right attitude - she is grateful in all circumstance.

I am thankful that everyone got out of that building and that I can still hear my best friend laugh!

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you in United States, and in Canada may we celebrate a little with our neighbors.

What are you thankful for?

Thank you for sharing your friends story. Thanksgiving allows us all an opportunity to slow down and reflect on what is really important in life: God, family and friends.

Hello Debbie,

Happy Thanksgiving to you, family and friends!

As a retired CT State Trooper and having experienced several structure fires, I am happy to hear all of the occupants made it out of the building safe and sound.

I am grateful to be able to embrace and cherish the beliefs passed down by my Mom and Dad.

I love our family traditions. Belongings can be replaced - life can not.

May the entire world have peace, freedom, love, respect and abundance.

Happy Thanksgiving to all here in AR!

You asked if we'd all be as gracious about our "things"? I think maybe coming so close to losing the ones we love, our neighbors and friends, puts things in perspective and we are probably more aware of how "things" can be replaced. Just my thought. I'm so grateful your friend and her significant other are alive and well.

Debbie - Thank God your friend and significant other are okay.  This really brings home how close we all are to a life changing event.  So many of us are working with families facing foreclosure.  For them they will have not much of a Thanksgiving.  We all do what we can, for today we just have to respond with what our heart tells us.  Happy Thanksgiving to you, your family and friends.

Yes, things can be replaced.

We lost all of them in a house fire about 25 years ago, and it's not fun to reach for a favorite something and remember its gone. But at the time, we were just so thankful that our naughty little dog had taken off to visit grandma's house that morning and we had decided to let her stay there because we were going to be gone all day.

I always thought that maybe she sensed something...

Be grateful for the good things!

I am thankful for my God and that he loves me, even in tough times I have seen his hand at work in my life and in the life of my family.

Debbie, Your words ring true. I attended Malcolm Johnsons' memorial service on Monday, our brilliant young agent that died in the hotel explosion in Mexico. After hearing what a wonderful human being he was, many of us at the reception after were talking about how we too often forget to take the time to know each other better and appreciate each other as more than just agents in the business. I felt a closeness and kinship with many of my peers and reflected on how truly blessed I am to know them and also how doubly blessed I am to have my beautiful children and loving husband to come home to each day.

I am thankful to have known Malcolm, even though only professionally. He was a lovely man and will be greatly missed. His gift to me came most unexpectedly on the day of his memorial service. I pressed the "reset" button and took a look around at what really matters in life...Thank you, Malcolm.

I am glad everyone was okay, and the things are just things. We can get through any hardship one day at a time, by putting one foot in front of the other. One of my favorite sayings is "if you're going through hell, keep going" I am thankful that so far, I just keep going.

I think, living every day with gratitude in your heart is the only way. I'm grateful for my family, for my health, for my ability to work and help, for wonderful people I meet on my way. I feel truly blessed.
