dollar signJust a reminder that if you bought a new Hamilton County home or refinanced your home this year, you have until Dec. 31st to file for both your mortgage tax deduction and your homestead deduction, if you are eligible. Your Indiana property tax deductions must be filed by the Dec. 31 deadline in order to receive credit on next year's property tax payments.

Remember that these deductions can save you THOUSANDS of dollars!

If you have already filed for your Indiana property tax deductions, you don't need to refile unless there is a new mortgage or a deed change on the home, or if the property has been put in a trust.  Also remember that you can save money even if you do not have a mortgage on your home.

Credits and requirements for filing Indiana property tax deductions include:

MORTGAGE DEDUCTION
$3,000 deducted from assessed value of property. For properties closed after July 1, 2008, new procedures require the title company to file for the Homestead Exemption using the Indiana State Sales Disclosure Form (State Form 46201). The title company sends this form to the county recorder's office along with your deed. Although this is done automatically, it is in your best interest to call the recorder's office of the county in which the property is located to verify that this exemption has been filed. For more information on the new sales disclosure form, visit http://www.in.gov/dlgf/.

HOMESTEAD CREDIT
$35,000 deducted from the assessed value of property and 20 percent deducted from the net tax amount. Taxpayers are eligible for homestead credit on their principal residence, only. Homestead consists of dwelling and real estate not to exceed one acre. Homeowners must still personally file for the mortgage tax exemption. You can do this by taking a copy of the settlement statement you received at closing to your County or Township Auditor's or Assessor's Office .

Pat:  Thanks for the reminder.  Although here in Texas we do not have to file anything for what you call the "mortgage tax deduction"... but buyers who have purchased their home this year... DO have to make their one-time filing of their homestead exemption forms.  Time for me to write my yearly homestead exemption post.

Pat, that's a great reminder for any state who has the homestead exemption - truly a savings.

Karen--I guess we all have our end of year 'house cleaning' duties.  I have a feeling you didn't really need any reminder at all. :O)

Juli--It is amazing how many people forget!!
