Video Blogging: Real Estate Jargon

I've been experimenting with video blogging and have started a series of YouTube video blogs on the language of real estate. In all honesty, it is a way I hope to attract new business. My first thoughts were than I cannot act and I was unsure of how to present myself in a video blog and also unsure of how I would be received by the public and by my peers.

The presentation of listings and the ways that brokers present those listings and themselves has changed dramatically over the past 15 years. We have entered the age of transparency. I have been somewhat bothered by training that I've seen which teaches brokers to hire someone to write their blog articles for them if they are not good writers or if they don't have time. I've also been put off by a particular bit of training that taught one to use a gel pen to write a "personal" note to a client and then copy it enough times to send it to all of one's clients. How is that not using technology and gimmicks to deceive past clients?

Video blogging is a challenge for me. I'm not used to seeing myself as others see me. I've studied others' videos in search of what not to do and I continue to improve my  presentation. My first effort was on Assessments, Appraisals, and Inspections. This one is on the use of the word Exclusive in real estate.

One thing I've learned in video blogging, unless you are an actor, you convey a lot more of yourself in a video blog than you do with just the written word.

Thank you for watching.

This is great Glenn.  I think people will really enjoy seeing you in person.  Your easy and calm manner really comes through in the video and will be attractive to many potential clients.  I think your video really instills a sense of trust that just can't come through in print media.  Great job!

Glenn, great job on the video. One suggestion: while filming, change your screensaver on the desktop in the background to flip through your listings (past or present) or logos such as your company logo, Realtor logo, equal housing, etc. The human eye is drawn to movement, give those eyes something to look at that ties them back in to you.

Ingrid - Thanks

Kristen - I think video is going to be important, for more than just listing walk-throughs.

Drick - I saw that in the final segment but it took so many takes that the screen saver came on. Nexst time I'll know.

Patrick - Thanks

Glenn, yes great job.  It came off as being more personable and I think connects to potential clients better than super choreographed presentations we see.  I've been thinking of doing much the same thing...just trying to find the time.  Great job.

Nick - It takes some practice. I keep working at it. I'll watch for something from you. Video, may already be passe, but it doesn't make sense to skip any steps on the climb up the technology ladder.

Glenn, I liked it.  The resolution is wonderful.  What camcorder are you using?  Video, much like anything else we do, gets easier with time and we get more comfortable with the medium.  You're doing a great job!

Gerri - Thanks. I bought a Zi8 Kodak recently and picked up the basic through trial and error. I had a mini tripod. Got the remote a few days later (which allows you to zoom) and will pick up a wide angel/macro lens next. Now I have to quit going up in my lines.

Glenn - Nice! I love it when I find another Realtor using video. So many agents are afraid of video, but you jumped right in and did a great job! I started a video library recently where I interview people like a closing attorney and a Mortgage guy. Check it out on Facebook at The Community Realty Group or on my blog site at www.yourcherokeecountyrealestatepro.com. I look forward to seeing more of your work. Let me know what you think of mine.

Peter - I looked at several of your property videos. Nicely done. I see in your log you've been at it for 3 years, and all of that hard work shows.

I like the way you work.I think my biggest cnaellhge to overcome is myself. I let the stress of not making a sale, or living in a rundown house get to me.In saying that however I think it’s the things that I didn’t know I should be doing that I have picked up from you are Chris that are helping me in the right direction. And I have to say it is starting to look better at my end.
