At one time a door handle was a work of art… What happened?

By

This was a door handle on a fort that was built in the 1800 in Utah and I have to say it fascinated me knowing that this door handle was handmade. To me it had personality, it had depth, it was something that had pride.

Old Door Handle (handmade)

Today, we don’t see door handles like this anymore to which I think it is a shame. Yes, they were easier to break into and that is part of the reason for the change. But, I would rather have this than any door handle I have in my house.

What happened to style when it comes to things such as a simple door handle?

Changing the way you look at real estate

My business partner and I recently listed a mid 1920's home and the interior doors still have the original crystal glass handles.  They are beautiful and we hope the next owner decides to keep them.

Todd - It's sad that style and handmade quality has flown out the window in so many aspects of what we see made today.   Things were so much simpler in the early days....too bad we can't harness that kind of craftsmanship to last forever.

Todd -  I love the grain in that door knob. I have to show you the door knobs on all my 2nd floor doors.  The white is a closet door and the natural is a bedroom door -  coincidence?

Todd,

I live in "Tract Builder Land," and nice touches that do not convey $$$/square feet do not make the cut.

We have traded away a lot of the skills which created very nice touches in a home for the banality of maximum square foot per dollar.

This is cool Todd, but I have to say that I'm not showing this to my wife.  All I need is one more thing for her to buy!

What a gorgeous doorknob. I also love the glass doorknobs found inside some older homes. They add so much charm.

Hi Todd... that is what happens when craftsmanship loses out to mass production!  I'll vote for craftsmanship every time.

Todd, it is true that it isn't just door handles but alot of other old attributes like fireplace mantels or chandeliers that just showed the craftmanship of the times...i look hard for them now but the reproductions are not quite the same....

Hi Todd - thanks for sharing this.  When showing properties - it is sometimes easy for buyers to miss these quality features so it's fun and a value-add to point them out to clients.

Todd,

Some still are, some are better looking than ever.

Still door "nobs" today are rarely artistic!

Todd,

There are many old door handles such as the wooden one you show with character. Some are glass, wrought iron, porcelain, and other materials. :)

Todd - That doorknob is a real treasure, it seems today that mass produced products outshine unique quality crafted items.  It's a shame, some of the greatest treasures are cast off in the garbage every day.
