So What Do You Really Think About Me!

By
Real Estate Agent

Skeptical ThinkerIf you really want to know what your clients think about you try having them imagine that you are no longer in the business.  Have them ask you to refer an agent, like yourself, and have them list the attributes that they liked about you.  This is exactly what happened to me...

I had a client two years ago that listed their home with me in Pittsburg, CA and wanted to buy a home in WalnutCreek, CA.  Great couple, very sharp, and wanted to see all of my references before working with me.

I worked hard for this couple but life circumstances came up for them, new baby and job change, that pulled them out of the home hunting and selling.  We amicably parted ways and I contacted them maybe 4 or 5 times since then.

It had been almost a year since I spoke to them when I received this email:

"We are looking to buy in the Walnut Creek area again since the interest rates are at an all time low.  Are you still a practicing realtor?  We have seen a couple of homes that we are interested in and are trying to find a realtor to represent us. We really enjoyed working with you and would like to consider working with you again if you're open to working with us. "

"If you're not able to work with us at this time (either not interested, don't have the time, or you're not a practicing agent anymore), can you refer me to any agents we should consider?  I'd really to work with someone with a style that's similar to yours:  not a pushy salesperson, intelligent, knowledgeable about the area, offers objective feedback on the property, easy going, good sense of humor, gets along well with kids, and has a flexible schedule to show homes based on our availability."

Wow!  I knew I was different but I have always had a hard time defining it without sounding self serving.  This client hit it on the head for me.

Now I know that I am:

Not a pushy salesperson

Intelligent

Knowledgeable about the area

Offers objective feedback on the property

Easy Going

Have a Good Sense of Humor

Gets Along Well With Kids

Has a flexible schedule to show homes based on peoples availability.

It would seem  that in order for them to be served they had to define what they liked about working with me so that they could maintain the same experience.  And all of this because they had to imagine that I was not in the business anymore.  Give it a try, you might be pleasantly surprised about what they think of you.

A good impression lasts a long time.  I had people I had met who had a REALTOR they didn't like.  After a year they ended up calling me out of the blue wanting to write an offer on a house.

Andy, Thanks - Love the Surfboard - Aloha!

Bryan,  I always try to leave a good impression.  Awesome that they called you back after a year "Outta the Blue"  That is how this one came to me.

Thanks Bill.  That is what I give my clients and it is great when they reciprocate or at least appreciate when they have been treated well.
