Being a New Real Estate Agent - My First Listings

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Marte Cliff Copywriting

This is a follow-up to my earlier post about my first days as a real estate agent - way back in 1985.

I thought I'd continue on and tell you about my first two listings - so new agents who are feeling frustrated will see that someday they'll look back and laugh...

After a couple of months sitting around the office, I did finally get two listings. Not because I knew anything about marketing at that point, but because I was the one there on floor day when the people called.

I'll never forget that first listing appointment.

It was for a log cabin about 21 miles north of town. Eighteen miles of good road, and 3 miles of potholes and bumps.

I arrived at the scheduled time, and I knocked on the door. Nothing. But I could hear a piano playing inside. I knocked again. Nothing. Not knowing what else to do, and not having the nerve to walk away, I stood there in the cold November wind and waited.

Finally, about 15 minutes later, the door opened. The gentleman who answered politely explained to me that he was practicing the piano, and he never interrupted his practice for any reason. It wasn't an apology, just an explanation.

I didn't ask why he had scheduled my visit during his practice time.

My second listing was for an elderly couple with a newer house overlooking the river. A nice, ordinary, solid house.

I went in, got the tour of the house and sat down to visit with them. After they signed the listing I found out that this couple's son - who had done much of the construction on the house - was a competing real estate agent who worked at one of the other firms in town.

So there I was, in the middle of a family feud.

As I said, very little was selling in those days, so both of those listings expired off the market.

The elderly couple decided to forgive their son for whatever he had done and they listed the house with him. As I recall they were sorry for that later, but some families are like that.

Those are two fun examples of why I just never wanted to do listings.

I feel I am more in control of things with a well qualified buyer, the only kind I'll work with! I love to give the keys for the house to the new buyers. I've been doing it for 15 years and it's still fun!

Jon - Yes, I remember the fun of being with people who were excited over their new home. Now I get the fun of dealing with people who are excited over their new copy!

Interesting start. Seems like the piano man was a bit eccentric and the family feud could have been explosive! Makes life interesting doesn't it?

Marte,

These were tough lessons. I'm glad that your current listings are not quite as memorable as these, or you'd be out of business.

Marte....Your first two listing were certainly unusual - an eccentric old piano player and parents punishing their son.  Wow, glad things have gotten better!

Dan - You're welcome. Looking back is kinda fun - now that it's over.

Gary - Yes, the piano man was eccentric - and a bit of a jerk! As for the family - I think they continued to drive each other crazy for as long as the parents were alive. I got better acquainted with all of them years later.

Brian - Thankfully, now my customers are real estate agents and other small business people. The only time I talk with homeowners is when they decide to go FSBO and need someone to write their marketing materials. In other words, not often, since most FSBO's are doing it to avoid spending money!

Carra - Yes, thank goodness they weren't all like that! I get an eccentric copywriting client now and then, but thankfully I've learned to back away most of the time before getting too involved. The ones I don't recognize in time... well, they're just cow pies!

We all have some "war" stories, huh? If it stayed that hard we would have all quit! lol

Sheila - Sometimes I think it would be fun to take a whole pile of those war stories and turn them into a book. It would be a good warning for those who decide to get into real estate because it's an "easy job" and a good laugh for the "old timers" who have been there and done that.
