Less than three years after establishing a nuclear power presence in uptown Charlotte, Shaw's Power Group has announced a major global strategic partnership with Toshiba Corporation that will bring an estimated 225 new jobs to the Charlotte area. More than 80 percent of the new hires will be for engineering positions with an average salary of approximately $95,000 per year. The hiring process begins this week.
"On behalf of the 1,100 employees in our Charlotte office, I am honored to share this news with you tonight," Clarence Ray, Chief Executive Officer of Shaw's Power Group, told the sell-out crowd at the Charlotte Chamber's Annual Meeting at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
Under the agreement, Shaw will serve as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for all of Toshiba's Advanced Boiling Water Reactor (ABWR) nuclear power plants located outside of Japan and Vietnam. Shaw was also awarded the role as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor for two nuclear power units at NRG Energy's South Texas Nuclear Project near Bay City, Texas.
"Shaw's Power Group is proud to call Charlotte home and we are very excited about the opportunity to increase the size of our staff here in what has become our nation's New Energy Capital," Ray added.
"This is a wonderful addition to our expanding energy sector," said Charlotte Chamber President Bob Morgan. "This is yet another example of how partnering our existing business strengths with our emerging energy strengths is driving Charlotte's future economy."
