Where in the world is Henderson, Colorado?
I get this question all the time! People seem to think that this small town must be somewhere way out on the eastern plains of Colorado, or on the border of Wyoming. They are shocked when I report that it takes me 15 minutes to get from my home in Henderson to Lower Downtown Denver.
So here are the facts:
In 1859, John D "Colonel Jack" Henderson bought an island on the South Platte River in a bar for the sum of two barrels of whiskey. He set about building a trading post, cow corral, a bridge, and a hotel. Also on the island was a ranch house.
Colonel Jack sold provisions and food to gold seekers heading up the South Platte during the Pike's Peak Gold Rush. At this time, Henderson Island Station was a part of Kansas Territory and the first permanent settlement in the South Platte River Valley between Fort St Vrain and Cherry Creek Diggings.
Map and Area
Henderson is located just 16 miles northeast of Denver. It has always been a small town and later became a farming community. There are still produce farms and farmer's markets in Henderson, along with homes, a post office, and the Adams County Regional Park and Fairgrounds, and Barr Lake State Park.
As easily seen on the map, Henderson has easy access to I76 and E470. It takes approximately 15 minutes to get to downtown Denver, and 30 minutes to get to Boulder, and about 20 minutes to get to Denver International Airport.
Henderson is home to Belle Creek, Dunes Park, and River Run communities to name a few. Portions of Henderson have been annexed by Thornton, Commerce City and Brighton. What remains is a vibrant small town community that thrives on social interaction with family and friends.
Coach Chad Weinand, of Henderson Hawks Football, when asked to describe Henderson, had this to say:
"I think the Belle Creek and Henderson communities are one of the best kept secrets in the metro area. I thank everyone for their support and we will absolutely be back next year, bigger and more organized than this year. This is something I plan on doing even when my kids are no longer in the program.”
