We create and optimize websites, so we've seen some pretty poor ones in our time. Here are some of the top mistakes we've found in real estate websites:
An outdated website
- You know the ones, the sites that look as if they haven't been touched since the 1990s. Sites that scroll (no internal links), flashing buttons, no access to MLS listings, etc. Instead, you should keep your site fresh, updating and overhauling it completely at least every five years or so.
No one to call
- You'd be surprised -- we were at first -- about how many Realtors and other realty professionals neglect to place something as "no duh!" on their sites as contact information. In addition, while not as bad as not giving information at all about how to contact you, is burying contact information on your site. The best place to put your contact information? Somewhere on each and every page.
Having no blog
- Blogging establishes you as an expert in your field and in the region in which you do business. Blogging also allows potential customers come to feel as if they know you, which helps them want to do business with you. So start blogging. Aim for once a week at the bare minimum; two or three times a week is best.
Too much of the of IDX/MLS
- Akin to not having any access to the MLS on your site is having too much of it. What do we mean? Don't let your IDX/MLS system become the main focus of your site. Instead, offer good information on your site about your selling area's communities. Offer articles on getting a good mortgage. And so on. Present news your visitors really can use!
Not attending the social media party
- Used well, Facebook and Twitter really can help you build a following. These two social media giants also can provide your followers and friends updates on new homes available, new mortgage rates, etc. Social media sites also help establish relationships with former, current and potential customers. Start tweeting today!
