Recently, I received a blog post via email written by Ask Tara@Trulia. I love what she writes and she offen inspires me to write on the same subject from my own point of view. In this November 30,2010 blog post Ask Tara @ Trula wrote "5 tips for showing and selling your home during the holidays". On November 24,2010 I wrote a similar post: Selling Your House During the Holidays
When I read Taras blog post I left this comment :
Tara,
I have to say I completely disagree! Most of the time you and I see eye to eye, but this time we are far, far apart. Guess great minds don't always think alike?
Here is my point of view : http://www.realestatecoloradostyle.com/selling-your-house-during-the-holidays
In no way did I mean to disrespect Tara, her opinion or her post. I've since written her a note telling her this.
I've been blogging long enough to know putting your own link into another persons blog comments is wrong. But at that moment I decided to do just that, leave a link. I felt it was constructive and relevant.
The night I left my comment and link I checked my blog to find I had over 1000 hits on my page and even a couple of comments. I'm thrilled at the exposure, but not at another persons expense.
Ask Tara @ Trulia aka Tara-Nicholle Nelson is a great blogger and teacher. I do respect her and hope that all who read this post will follow her as well!
Dena - I've said it many times before, but I don't think leaving a link is an offense. It's a personal thing for me and as long as the link is relevant I don't see the trouble with it. On Trulia, the links are "nofollow" - so there's no search engine implications, and although it may get readers of her blog to go visit yours, (in my opinion) it's a narrow-minded view to think that those same readers without the availability of a link wouldn't have clicked on something else (such as the ads, links that Trulia adds to each members' profile, any of the Trulia links, etc.) and moved on.
Relevant linking is good for everyone. When I see a link on one blog pointing to another relevant blog in a related field, I actually feel more cofident about the blog. Why? It shows that another industry professional is reading and listening to that blog. If the content were no good, other industry professionals wouldn't be reading it right?
Of course, the linking "code of honor" goes back to the days when people were doing little more than link farming and trying to attract attention however they could. Some people still do it and those people are often blocked by bloggers quicker than you can blink.
If you ever find yourself on any of my blogs, feel free to link away as long as it's relevant (which your link was). On my main site (non-ActiveRain blog), my comments are even "dofollow" and include the CommentLuv plugin, which pulls the latest post from the URL you give it and links back to that. Talk about giving away the love...
Hi Dena, 1000 hits is awesome! I think you made some really good points, especially about the dark and cold foreclosures/vacant homes! Brrrrrr! and I love your videos. A different point of view should always be welcome as long as it is respectful and I think yours was.
Dena: I appreciate your obvious effort to play fair, but did not actually take any offense from your post, given that the video you linked to was clearly relevant to the discussion. One of the benefits for agents who participate substantively in discussions like that one is traffic and leads for those agents, so I'm glad you benefitted in that way - that's one of the key reasons we exist!
On another note, I don't actually think our viewpoints are that far apart. In the first bullet point of my post, I sketched out both the challenges AND advantages to selling over the holidays, but I think many agents got stuck on the challenges, and didn't read the advantages part!
In any event, I appreciate your kind words and note, and wish you and yours very Happy Holidays.
Hi Dena, if it hadn't been for this post I wouldn't know to follow Tara.....which I'm off to do.....
Have a great weekend!
Hi Dena~
I liked your VIDEO...and the points about the home environment that you made. I read Tara's comment (above) and appreciate that you were concerned... This kind of integrity is good for all of us.
Thank you all! I'm the queen of over reacting. I hate when I upset others or my messages are mis-perceived.
