City The Greenville Council tonight will consider leasing to a Georgia firm land for apartment-complex parking.
Greenville Utilities and city staff have been working with Place Acquisition, a student-housing developer from Atlanta, on a lease agreement for property located near the utility's old power plant site just off First Street near the Tar River west of Pitt Street.
Place plans to construct a multistory student-housing facility on the property it is purchasing adjacent to the site, said city planner Harry Hamilton.
Because of its height above the Tar on the riverbank, the property is not in a flood zone, Hamilton said.
For several years, the utility has been involved in the remediation of the site due to coal and tar deposits that have contaminated the soils, city staff reported. Remediation will be entering the final phase in the near future.
Greenville Utilities' board on Aug. 21 authorized the agency's general manager to execute the lease agreement, subject to similar approval by the City Council.
The developer will pay the city $15,920 a year to lease the property, with adjustments made based on a formula.
In other business slated for the 6 p.m. meeting, the City Council will hear presentations by the city's Human Relations Council and Youth Council; and receive a presentation on the annual audit for the fiscal year ending June 30.
The council meets in council chambers on the third floor of City Hall, 200 W. Fifth St.
