Cottage Hill School is one of three public and one private schools located just outside the gates of Lake of the Pines. The site is about 10 miles north of Auburn, California and about 15 miles south of Grass Valley, California. This cluster of schools includes public schools Magnolia Middle and Bear River High, and the private school, Forest Lake Christian.
Cottage Hill, Magnolia, and Bear River are geographically contiguous, they are side by side by side. Many of the area children move through their entire matriculation by walking a few steps between the three schools. The athletic fields of these three schools are often shared.
Cottage Hill Elementary serves approximately 460 students from kindergarten through fifth grade. This is a small school located in a predominately rural setting. The majority of students are white.
Though small in size, Cottage Hill has notable academic standing. The school has been both National Blue Ribbon School and a California Distinguished School. In 2009 the school scored 856 on the API (Academic Performance Index) as measured against the statewide performance target of 800. The school met or exceeded 13 out of 13 statewide academic goals.
