Pay it Forward - Christmas Walk

By
Real Estate Agent with Real Property, Inc.

Every year over the first weekend of December our local Chamber of Commerce puts on a Holiday kick off called "Christmas Walk" for our local merchants with a tree lighting Friday eve and a Santa parade on Saturday morning.

A number of years ago I was involved in a local Veteran Firemans's organization that has an old horse drawn fire engine. Despite quite a bit of resistance at first from the group I convinced them to get  involved in the "Christmas Walk" activites which they had not done before.

After alot of sweat and perserverance we opened our Hall, which is right in town on the parade route, to the public and served hot apple cider, coffee, hot choclate and cookies to the frosty folks taking in the holiday festivities.  As my special contribution I sponsored bags and bags of candy canes and a team of horses to pull the old fire engine in the parade.  You should have seen the glow on the kids faces along the parade route when the big horses came trotting down the snowy street pulling the brightly polished old fire engine and the kids grins beaming with the candy canes we handed out to them.

The tradition continues even though the horses have long since been put out to pasture now the fire engine is pulled in the parade with a pickup truck.

John - that is such a great story!    I can remember our Wilton Memorial Day parades when we had cows and horses in the parade - no longer.......    You really gave a lot to your town, and sounds like you still do!

Dagny, Thank You so much! the years I did that was how I celebrated Christmas, even after more than 10 years I still get a smile and a warm feeling when I think about it.

John,Your dedication to that group will never be forgotten. The horses pulling that old fire pumper in the snow was right out of a  Currier and Ives painting.Keep up the good work.

Jim, Thanks! I think I enjoyed the horses and the candy canes as much and maybe even more than the kids did.. I sure did enjoy doing it to share with our community.
