Red Sky at Morning in Greer Ranch, Murrieta...

A pretty spectacular sunrise occurred this morning in my Greer Ranch neighborhood in Murrieta. As I glanced out my window into my backyard, I saw low-lying clouds burst into flame as the sun slowly rose in the east. I grabbed my camera and snapped a series of photos to capture the event shown in the photo below.

If you look closely, you can see a flock of birds flying low across the sky.

The flock appears just above the hill on the left as tiny dark specks dotting the horizon, circled in the photo on the left.

Is the old saying, "Red sky in morning, sailor's warning” true, or is it just an old wives' tale?

Apparently it's true, Shirley. According to Wikipedia’s Weather Lore page, “Weather systems typically move from west to east, and red clouds result when the sun shines on their undersides. If the morning skies are red, it is because clear skies to the east permit the sun to light the undersides of moisture-bearing clouds coming in from the west.” …thus announcing a storm’s arrival.
