Did They Die in The House?

By
Real Estate Agent with Vision Real Estate LLC

I can't tell you how many homes I have shown that have been owned by elderly individuals that no longer live in the home.  The home is usually in decent shape but nothing has been updated since 1957.  There is nothing wrong with it, it's just how it it.

I have found that Buyers NEED to know if someone has died there.  Personally, I would rather not know, but some Buyers want that info before they proceed with an offer.  Even if they are in love with the house, I think of handful of them would walk if it turns out that someone has passed away in the home.

For me, I think it would be something great to have passed away (naturally) in my own home, rather than in a nursing home, a wicked car accident or some freak accident at the real estate office.  At least I would be surrounded by my own outdated decor and personal things!

How about other Agents out there?  Has anyone had experience where someone died in the home and the Buyers walked?

I have sold a home where the person was murder in it. It was priced way below market. The buyers were investors and the history did not matter.

I'm not a realtor, but I have had several relatives die in their own homes.  Like you, I think it would be preferable, and I don't feel their "spirits" or whatever when I visit the survivors.  But, some people who profess to be religious are still "superstitious" (inexplicably) about that issue.

I think some buyers really care about it and others don't.  I beleive an unnatural death should be disclosed without the buyer asking. Interesting subject Julie...one that we DO encounter often.

I recently had one client that made it a point to ask if someone had died in a home she was very interested in buying.  This was a deal killer for her.  Luckily there had not been a death in the home.

I agree with all comments, and just had dinner with a friend last night whose husband had committed suicide in their home. The disclosure needs to be appropriate to what is called for your area, however, the neighbors are going to tell them the minute they close, and I can only imagine how awful anyone would feel for not having disclosed.
