Marsh Creek Church is Steeped in History of Gettysburg Pa

I have been meaning for some time to do some posts on the historic church's of the Gettysburg Adams County Pa area. Many of the Gettysburg area churches are deep in historic lure. From the early 1700's to many churchs that served as Civil War Hospitals.

I would be remiss if I did not begin my series of historic church's of the Gettysburg Adams County Pa are with the Marsh Creek church. The Marsh Creek Church is steeped in history of Gettysburg Pa. The founding of the Presbyterian church at Marsh Creek dates back to 1748. The original churches were log structures, many situated along the banks of Marsh Creek.

Marsh Creek Church Gettysburg PaThe structure you see today was built in 1790 along the Fairfield Rd, (back then it was known as the "Great Road"). The stone structure was built from stones that were brought to construction site by church member families. As you can see the Marsh Creek Church has stood the test of time and remains pretty much intact as stood then.

The Marsh Creek Church underwent a complete remodel in 1850, just a few years before the Civil War during which the Marsh Creek Church served as a Confederate field hospital. in 1891 the structure was again remodeled and the pews and pulpit furniture installed at that time are still in use today. The Marsh Creek Church is a wonderful testament to the  mentality that if you do it right the first time, it will last for many years to come.

An interesting footnote is that the Reverend Alexander Dobbin who constructed and operated the Dobbin House is buried in the old cemetery of Marsh Creek Church.
