The Queen of Cheap: On Color with Lasting Power

By
Home Stager with Capital Style Home Staging

In our vigilance to protect business profits, we all look for the best value in inventory.  For some, this means buying high quality pieces that will hold up over time, returning the greatest rental totals.  For others it means "recycling" by finding deals in bargain basements, thrift stores and yard sales.  These items may not last as long, but they're often "paid for" with the first job.  Regardless, the look of our work is our trademark, our reputation, and our advertising all rolled into one. bristow gallery

(Shameless self promotion:  and, by the way, here's one of mine, which included repainting these walls from sponged cobalt blue).

Some of us go neutral and classic; some of us go bold and trendy.  All good stuff, because our businesses buying hatmust naturally reflect who we are as stagers and designers (yes....I step to the edge of the cliff, daring to use the "D" word.  Fire away at me; I can take it).  But we're ALL buying, ALL the time.

In order for our inventory to have the longest possible (VISUAL) shelf life, we all would benefit from awareness of upcoming color and fashion trends.  With this in mind, I share information from the upcoming MATERIAL WORLD trade show in New York.  For the full story, check out the Material World website.

For Capital Style Staging, I've developed 3 basic collections:  neutral/rustic/homespun....then vibrant/fun/trendy......then classical/timeless.  Typically, I will blend collections to suit the home and the target market.  Let it also be said that I don't have a TON of inventory.

Here are the new home fashion color palettes that launch this fall.  Whether you choose to adjust your buying to trends, or to stay neutral classical....that's up to you.  But this, apparently, is where the industry is going.  I suggest these to you as thoughts when choosing accessories and accent paint.  I am not advocating running out to buy lime green love seats and sky blue chairs.  vibrants

Interesting to me Cheri, and I agree. I'm not buyin' too many purple couches this fall.  On the other hand, purple can deepen to a dark plum/almost brown, which might be great pillow covers on a sand-colored chair.  The limes and vibrant olives can deepen down to evergreen...the reds to burgundies, etc.  What each of us decides to buy is based on what we can use with the clientelle we've built, no doubt.  But what I love about AR is the opportunity to know what's out there, what others are doing, and what's about to come over the horizon.

Thanks for stoppin' by! and Cheers! from DC...

I like the fresh leaves (duh, my inventory has so much green in it, it's only my fave color heh). i think in the heat of the night is very modern but may be too dark for staging. color palettes that are neutral are always great because we can always punch up the room with colors.

oh i miss dc,

Cindy....we must be twin sisters of different mothers.  Green is totally my color, and I could live in a lime room, wearing lime clothes and driving a lime car, as long as I was wearing plum colored shoes!  I LOVE color, and although I stay neutral rustic in my staging, you will almost always find hot pops of color.  I know we're not supposed to decorate for our clients, but I always try to take their tastes into consideration when designing spaces.  Knowing what's coming over the horizon is always good.  Knowledge is power, but only if you USE it!

Trendy Betty...that's you!  Margo should be duly impressed.

I went SO neutral when I first started (textures....that was the name of my game) that I'm lovin' adding splashes of color.  I don't own very much in the way of furnishings (wicker, and some end tables) but those accessories sure can add P.U.N.C.H!

Jaynee - Love the color trends.  Thanks for sharing.

Although I love lime green w/ brown I am still a little scared of it.  I need to step out of my box and conquer my fears.  Thanks for helping!

Don't know if this ultimately helps any of our businesses or not, but it can't hurt us!  I have been in design my whole life, so have learned about separating my personal tastes from my business tastes....at least somewhat.  Naturally there cannot be a complete abyss, because our personal sense of style is, to some degree, the reason we're good at this stuff.

However.....I think awareness of new trends, new designs, new fabrics, materials, and concepts (like living Green......etc.) help form us into better professionals that can flex to the needs of our clients.  Sadly, I'm afraid I can testify that there are stagers out there who literally take their personal possessions on the road, using exactly that, from one job to the next.

Thanks for stopping by, and please let me know the result if you start buying in these directions.  I'd love to see photos or have client feedback!

Cheers! from DC...

Well, after 7 years of studying, then getting dropped in the middle of Paris at age 16 ALONE, I sure should, Terry.  I remember enough to understand that YOU CALLED ME A LITTLE PIG, which I simply considered a respectful nod to the NEW FALL COLORS I was introducing in the blog, bringing our little conversation around full circle to the point of the post, deep intake of breath.  Whew.

Ain't life wonderful?  Cheers! from DC..

Arabic, Spanish, French....WOW, Terry!   And your English seems pretty good too.  Almost fluent, I'd say (;P).  So are these colors going to influence your fabric/accessories purchases, moving forward?

Cheers, and winks....from DC...

I am so into colors - I get bored easily with all this neutral stuff.  The neutrals are still my base, but I definitely punch them up. Lime on chocolate or hot pink - oh yah,I'm there - how about a sea water blue with brown , or tan or black?

Colors you are calling me...........

Does this mean - I am old and going back to the colors of my youth?

What color is 1980's green anyway?????

Sorry for my late response.  Computer caught a bit of a cold with fever, didn't recognize me....it's own MOTHER....and had to go to hospital.  Been offline pretty much for three days.  Withdrawl was fairly severe, but the computer is back home and feeling better.  Needless to say I've also survived.

Thanks for your visit.  Would you like another cup of coffee?
