New Life for an Old Phone and Maybe Save A Life as Well

I recently got a new cell phone for myself and my wife. Now what to do with the phones, as I certainly do not need additional clutter. Old cell phones have numerous uses, and from an environmental stand point should not be discarded as trash, as there are still hazardous chemicals within the components of the phones.

As we had done this a few years ago, we stripped out all our numbers from the memory, deleted any photos, and kept the SIM card.

Then began the problem.

My wife wanted to donate the phones to the National Coalition Against Domesic Violence. This organization refurbishes the old phones and gives them to women who are or have been victims of domestic abuse in order to alert the police should they again be threatened.

My choice was Phones for Life, which gives the phones to seniors, providing them with a 911-capable working mobile phone, enabling them to call for emergency help should they suffer an accident or emergency.

As we were stuck with the decision we chose to resolve it democratically, and did it the way my wife wanted. Both phones will get a new life and maybe also save a life. Far better than having it buried at the back of the closet, or decomposing in a land fill.
