Are you a 24/7 Agent or a Dawn to Dusk Agent?

Lately, I have been receiving phone calls very early in the morning and sometimes very late at night. I had answered my calls to the effect to demonstrate that I am available for my clients. Howevever, there have been times where they have felt that calling very late is the norm and it becomes a custom. Answering calls is great as it showed your availability which has been lacking since many agents use the phone as a voice mail system.

"Please leave a message and I will return your phone call" or "hello this is xxxx, can I help you (@ 10:30pm at night!!)?

Which one are you?

Do you answer your phone calls as though you are an On-Call Agent? Do you make yourself available every minute of your day for your client...as a form of illustrating your great customer service acumen? How many times have you answered your phone calls while having a nice dinner with your family or about the time where you answered your phone calls while with other clients. Or even worse, while you are in the bathroom?!!  In doing so, you allowing your 'job' to run by the clients and losing control of your own personal off-peak times that should be spent with family.

Or are you the type who operates on a 9-5 'job' schedule? You answer phone calls during those hours and your phone go into hibernation during off hours. I have even noticed some agents who ONLY answer calls between 1-2pm or 4-5pm and ALL calls not in this timeline will be sent to the forbidden vm. Wow! I speculate that these agents are either part-timers or very busy showing homes. I gather it is most likely the former.

Answering phone calls is good but when it cross the line where it enters personal times I feel is out of line. As in anything in life, when one gives an inch it will encourage others to want a foot. There is a threshold that should be drawn to separate business from personal times. This is the way to sanity or else you'll allow your job to run your life.

Going extreme on the spectrum can be detrimental so a balance in your time is a necessity.

Ring! Ring! (to answer or not to answer...that is the question) Which type are you?

Considering the time I am responding to this, I guess 24/7, but at least I am not a pop-tart!! But I do answer my phone at weird times, I'm just too darn curious.

I am available most days and times however, I have learned to not be on call when I am spending planned time with my children or other family members.  I will let my clients politely know when I am not available.

If I recognize the number, I pick up the phone whatever time it is.  I would rather speak with someone on the spot and get it out of the way then know a voicemail is sitting there waitng for me.

Just had this conversation with a Realtor friend of mine, who called me at 7:20am - not  a problem, as I'm pet sitting for her today/tomorrow, and had just sent her a text, but I have to say, for the most part, I'm a "within reasonable time" agent to answer and make calls - I don't want to call someone at 10pm, I feel that is somewhat inconsiderate, as most likely, I can't get in touch with my buyer/seller at that hour and same for the other side.   It can wait until tomorrow morning!

At first, a pop-tart and 24/7.  Then I remembered an instructor who told us NOT to let real estate become our life.

So now, 6-9 is good enough for me and I believe my services are enhanced because of it.

Thanks for bringing up the topic.  Good object lesson for the rookies.

Thanks all for the comments! It appears that getting the calls out of the way if we recognize the number but only during business hours. Letting it run our lives by constantly being on guard for the calls and be 'pop-tart' type result in an early burn out.
