Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Killer | New Law in California for 2011

Jeff's post informing of the new Carbon Monoxide Detector law in California (SB 183) is succint and informative.  We have friends that dealt with the unfortunate result of a furnace leak.  Fortunately they discovered the leak before anyone in their family perished but it could have been worse.  A fairly inexpensive device to detect CO will prevent tragedy.  Now it's the law.

Carbon Monoxide - The Silent Killer Prompts a New Law in California for 2011

Crime Scene? Or the Fault of Carbon Monoxide? The dangers of carbon monoxide have been known for quite some time, although perhaps not as well publicized as they should be. We still hear stories of people succumbing to CO poisoning every year.

The problem, of course, is you cannot smell CO.

California has passed a new law that goes into effect January 1, 2011 regarding the use of carbon monoxide detection devices.

This new law, SB 183, enacts the 2010 Carbon Monoxide Poisoning Prevention Act that requires that a carbon monoxide detector be placed in any dwelling that is intended for human occupation. This is true for homeowners as well as owners of rental property.

Failure to comply is punishable by a fine of up to $200 for each offense.

Owners of existing single-family dwelling units must comply by July 1, 2011

All others must comply by January 1, 2013.

The Transfer Disclosure Statement (TDS) and the Manufactured Home Transfer Disclosure Statement (MHTDS) will now also include a disclosure about carbon monoxide detectors.

Dave:

My wife and I installed a CO detector in our home in 2007 after we served overseas for four years where the U.S. Embassy housing required such detectors.  The General Services Administration had found that CO was a threat, especially outside the country, and was proactive in requiring the detectors.

We had one in our home for years and then moved.  Haven't found the detector since the move.  In storage no doubt.  Going to get one today on my way home.  Safe and compliant I always say!

Dave this one hits home.  We just had our Heating and AC unit replaced, and my HVAC repair person informed me that my old heating cells were cracked and most likely leaking carbon monoxide into our home.  We had to put in a new unit, but we also installed several detectors.
