Pay It Forward: It's the Thought That Counts

Whenever I hike in the northwest, I carry a plastic bag to pick up cans, plastic bottles and candy wrappers strewn in the Cascade foothills near Seattle. Seems a never ending task. So on vacation in southeast Arizona this week I wanted to do the same thing on the hiking trails there. We hiked on 6 days and covered over 40 miles. Beautiful weather in the 70's. We hiked Sabino Canyon close to Tucson and we hiked out at Muleshoe Ranch...somewhat remote. We hiked in the Chiricahua Mountains and in Madera Canyon.

No trash on Arizona trails

My haul for the trip. One can and one piece of paper. I was amazed. Kudos to Arizona hikers. Seattlites, pay attention. Pack in in, pack it out.

Glenn, what a great lesson to all of us.  We all want clean trails, now if only all of us would follow your example we'd have them.

Lora - I did learn to do so by someone I met on a trail one day several years ago. Someday, maybe we'll all do it.

Glenn- I am jealous that you can hike in such nice weather right now. That is nice to know that you didn't have that much trash to pick up. We are pretty clean in Colorado on hikes as well (as far as I have seen). Happy Holidays.

Gay - Let's spread the word.

Kristi - Trash is no problem anytime. It's not a part of nature. I've been on come beautiful climbs in Colorado.

Sandy - I feel your rain. We got home to Seattle last night and we're nothing but wet.

When I walk along the C&O Canal in the DC Metro area, our trails are really clean here  too.  Isn't it nice that hikers are tidy!

Glenn, when I walk the beaches and see all the garbage it is amazing----but that stuff comes from all over the pacific rim :)  Certainly on the trails and highways there is no excuse.

I have noticed alot more trash on the beaches and along the road in the last year. Don't know if it is the economy or the debris swept onto  the beach from off shore.

You are so kind to leave your hiking place in a better place than when you found it.

That picture is so inviting.. warm weather can almost feel the sunshine.Makes one want to walk right into the scene.

Our weather on the north Oregon Coast is expecting three inches tonight. Ugh!

I love walking the Oceanside Harbor, and I am bewilder by the fact even with all the trash receptacles, that are around how much trash is on the beach, and strewn in the harbor. Your post reminds me the environment aspect is so important.

There is a guy who does this in our neighborhood regularly. At first I assumed it was his mandatory community service (as in, ordered by a judge for a previously committed transgression) but when I pulled over one day to thank him, he explained that he does it just to be a good neighbor and to prevent the trash from ending up in the Chesapeake Bay! Good souls.

Glen it is always fun spending time with nature.  Your photo is a great example of why more people need to get outdoors.  Cans and wrappers can certainly spoil a view so it is great that you do your part in trying to keep the trails clean.

Hi Glen - I am an avid backpacker and I always pack out trash that I find.  I ofetn find bottles, cans etc.  It is heartbreaking to me how some people have no respect for others who visit these pristine areas.  I usually bring a couple of large 40 gallon + bags, pick up and pack out as much as I can.

Wow, that is impressive! I can't figure out why we have so many who litter here in the NW when we claim to be so much for the environment.
