Where to Get Great FREE Pictures and Graphics for your Blog - How to Add Picture to Your Blog

Services for Real Estate Pros with Personal SEO - Website SEO and Real Estate Marketing

how to use a picture in your blogI am sure there are many blogs about this and have come across them from time to time but still people ask where to find great graphics for their blogs AND website.

There are a variety of places online to get FREE non-copyrighted photos, pictures and graphics.

  • Wiki Commons has some great photos and are easy to find and download
  • Morgue File has similar ones but I can never seem to find exactly what I want
  • Stock.Exchange also has a lot but some you must pay for (usually the good ones) and others are free but you still have to become a member.

My favorite hands down has to be Microsoft Publisher.  You know, that program on your computer that comes with Office.  Maybe you have used it to make fliers before? Use it for the clip art in your blogs. It's free and can be dispersed.  There are thousands of graphics and easy to find. The simplest way to do this is to open Microsoft Publisher and start a blank project. Then click the graphic addition and find what you want in the clip art. This can be done without opening publisher but you can't filter through the photos by what you are looking for and it's much more difficult.

Once you have found your graphic and it's on your Publisher page, Right Click and save image as...  Yes, it's already on your computer but you will need to save it somewhere you can find it quick and under a name you recognize. I save it to My Pictures file under My Documents under the easiest title so I can find it. Then Back to the Blog -

I add in a picture by clicking the icon of a tree on the top line of your blog and click to find itfind a picrure for your blog. I then title it and add in a description. I also make it part of the text by clicking the "appearance" tab" on top of the image box and set it to the right or left of the text and type in either an 8 or 9 in the horizontal and vertical space boxes. This is so the text does not butt right up against the picture.

If there is an error in uploading the picture, it's too big. Open in your picture editor such as Microsoft Office Picture Manager and edit the picture, then re-size. I simply cut the picture by half size and it usually works. Then save it again and re-upload it.

Once you have put it in the blog you may notice it's still too big for the size. Simply click on it until the white boxes are outlining the picture and drag it bigger or smaller to look visually appealing.

You can also find inexpensive graphics at iclipart.com

I hope this has helped and made adding picture to your blog easier.

Mel - Publisher is designed for personal and commercial use. I wouldn't think you can substitute words in a terms of service just to change it to your perspective. If they don't say blog in the TOS specifically I would say it's fair game. I would never use a pic from here for my personal logo. Microsoft is large enough that they know clearly what a blog is and if it was illegal they would state that clearly. I am not reselling my blog.  Plus, you can design a whole website in Publisher. I wouldn't think it would be there if you couldn't use it online. It would be the same as if I took the pics on a real estate flier. I am promoting a home but not selling the graphic.  I think we are all ok here and will continue to do so unless I read specifically where I cannot use Publisher in my personal blog. This office (clip art) is not online but the personal copy I purchased. Thanks for your concern though :) I also gave three other options if you feel you are correct. If you are uncomfortable, don't use it. :)

Hi Tammy~ I use my own photos just to avoid any trouble. It will be interesting to see what the others think. Lenn Harley is a good one for this kind of stuff. If she uses google alerts, I bet she shows up here since I just wrote her name in this comment.

Another useful post, Tammy.

Steven Graham, ActiveRain University Webinar coach provided the following five "free" image sites:

http://www.freephotosbank.com/ - female voice will speak typed in words !

http://www.stockvault.net/ -

http://www.openphoto.net/ - download doesn't ... download! Not good for non-tech types

http://www.turbophoto.com/ - free? Hmmm.

http://www.freedigitalphotos.net/ -

My favorite freebie: http://morguefile.com (one you mentioned in your post)

Thanks again!

Wayne - Ooo great! Will check that out and bookmark it! :)

Eric- i hope so. Thanks for the comment :)

Tom - Thank you for these great links. I hope the other readers check them out too! THANK YOU

Ken - I just can't pay for a pic that I am using one time in one blog. I will settle for something free.  Unless it's a great pic for a website or brochure. Thanks for the comment.
