But that was then. And now I have been invited to be part of a 5-6 person Technology Committee at my company. Wow! You've come a long way, baby! And so have you. Or so can you.
Don Reinhard's Featured Post about people who don't understand Active Rain inspired me to opine on the subject. If you don't get it, don't knock it!
Sure there are other places where you can have your own blog. You can host with other companies and blogging sites, or you can venture forth with your own WP blog and build up your Google ranking all by yourself. Can you be successful? Absolutely. Will it be as much fun? No way!
You see, one of the secrets of Active Rain is not just the ability to rank with Google. It's the journey along the way. It's the friends you make. It's the knowledge you learn. Let's face it - most of us looked like bobble head dolls the first few months here. At least I did! My head was spinning every time Brad came out with a new post :)
Points? What's the big deal about points? Don't we all love sky miles and every other sort of reward point we can garner? I love racking up points on my credit cards! Points are the carrot in front of me that has kept me coming back day after day even when I was really tired. That kept me reading fabulous blogs that taught/teach me so much. That kept me writing until I actually did learn to write, sort of! lol (At least I know I'm a lot better than I was back then...)
Active Rain - it's not a silver bullet but it is guaranteed to boost your social media knowledge and increase your bottom line if you read and follow directions from the many gurus here.
So here's my 2¢ - if you don't get it, don't knock it!
Indeed, Sharon. The journey to where we are no has been an awesome one, and I would hope that we've all learned enough to make a real difference for not only ourselves, but for our colleagues who want to do better.
Sharon, I do have a wordpress blog and it is not nearly as much fun as the rain is. Having my own brokerage I often get lonely but with the rain not any longer.
AMEN too!!! I also agree and wrote a blog not quite on the same subject, however this just makes the point again! Friendships, acquaintances, business relationships...that's what it's all about!
Sharon: I fully agree with you. I joined Active Rain three months before you did... in August of 2007. I had no clue what I was doing then. Perhaps I still don't. But... it is the journey that I treasure. Active Rain is so many things to so many people... in so many different ways. Sure... all the business stuff is great... but it is also a place that's become sort of a "shelter." A "haven." A place of friendship and a place of and for therapy.
And... it you don't get it... don't knock it. I have seen so many folks pay thousands of dollars to pay someone to put together a website/blog for them... and then... mainly because they got such poor results from something that honestly and truly "Looked" great... they quit their expensive blog. Just abandonned it. Whatever negatives anyone says about Active Rain... the fact remains... Active Rain... "works."
Sharon, as a relative newbie to AR, I agree with you! Blogging helps you to find your voice, and the feedback is great. I've picked up more snippets from AR than I have from my office meetings and I always make time in my busy day to sit down and see what's going on around the country.
Don, you gotta love it! MySpace for Realtors! :) I hadn't heard that one before! lol
You're welcome, Margo. I had to. I'm very passionate about this place!
Kate, you crack me up! I just got a lead today from AR. This stuff works!
Thank you, Elizabeth! I am proud to call you my friend as well! Now let's get those QR Codes cracking! lol
William, so true, so true. That's one of the things that makes this such a fantastic place. The sharing so that we all grow.
Marchel, I'm so glad to know you in the Rain!
Karen, it's the friendships that are the richest part. You can't do that on your single site blog.
Karen Anne, well I do think we have learned at least a little bit :) lol This stuff definitely works!
Rose, welcome to the Rain - the best single place in our industry to gain cutting edge knowledge and make fabulous friends along the way! We have a lot of fun here and we help each other and learn tons of stuff that the other Realtors won't know about for months...or years...or ever! lol
My brother, an agent in NJ, made me sign up two years ago but I didn't understand the value. Slow learner, I guess because since I have been reading and interactig faithfully over the last few months I have become an addict!
Sharon, I don't know how any place else could offer the total package we find here, experts in every field, great people who are always helpful, people we can be friends with. I could spend much time building up an independent blog, but there is only so much time and resources available, and I'll take the simple path on that one and use AR.
Frank and Sharon: This is a paradigm that extends to all things but is often ignored. It's as old as humanity I suspect.

Sharon, I love Active Rain for the information and interaction. As a basic member, I don't get the "juice" from a public blog using AR. I still love the service and wouldn't knock it. One must balance everything properly and AR is one of the resources everyone should use!
Hi Sharon....you make some great points...and you must put in the time. Active Rain, helps you get there faster. As you say the best part is the friends you make along the way.
Everyone should read your post :O)
MERRY CHRISTMAS
Awe shucks.
It matters not what is offered, there will always be folks who criticize.
Who cares??
Great message here Sharon. If you don't get it, don't knock it. I know AR has boosted my knowledge, made me a better Realtor, AND increased my business.
Sharon - I have to agree the ranking we get with Google are great. I have to say greatest thing I received from Active Rain is the wonderful friendships that I have made.
Sharon,
I agree; Active Rain is premium social media for the RE industry. Other platforms are attempting to copy the Active Rain model, but in my humble opinion lack the sense of "community".
Steve
Great advice Sharon - people tend to criticize what they don't understand. That's ok. If people don't want to experience the many benefits here - it's their loss!
Maureen, now you get it!
Bliz, you are so right. There is no experience like this anywhere for our profession. Active Rain is the Best!
Matt, I love that quote! So true :)
Gerard, if it is giving you what you need, that's great. But if you are letting the public see you are here, you will be closing more deals.
Lenn, you're right. It just gets my dander up once in awhile when people knock what they don't understand!
Craig me too!
Robert, I feel that way too. The extra exposure and business is great, but what warms my heart are my AR friends :)
Steve, any other forum pales in comparison to this one.
Karen, it is their loss and our gain!
I love the ability to learn new things as well and of course meeting great people like yourself is awesome too:)
Sharon - I've been here over a year and I think I'm still a bobble head. AR is a great place to learn, laugh and work!
