IPad works (unofficially) as Supra EKey

After just barley getting the new bluetooth to infra red converter for my HTC EVO (Android phone) so I could access Supra Lockboxes with it, I was blessed with an IPad as a gift.  I knew that Supra had recently released the adapter for the Iphone so I was anxious to start using my Ipad in the field instead of my tablet PC since it powers on and off better and is much lighter to carry.

I checked Supra's website for instructions but the Ipad wasn't listed as an option!  AAARRRGGG!

Since I have never been one to wait around for approval for something I think should work, I downloaded the software, plugged in a key fob designed for the Iphone (same adapter fits the Ipad), updated the key (via WIFI since my Ipad doesn't have the phone service) and it appears to work perfectly!

Supra Ekey and Ipad

I wonder how long it will take for Supra to acknowledge this works?  I know back when they first started using PDA's they started with the Palm Vx. I was using a Palm Tungsten C which was a much more powerful device so I wan't willing to go backwards.  Their engineers were stuck on the idea that it couldn't work on other devices since they hadn't built "cradles" to hard cable other devices so it couldn't work.  Even back then, my WIFI connection kicked in and updated my Tungsten C seamlessly.

When they switched to the Kryocera 7135 Smart Phone, I stayed with my Tungsten C since I didn't have to pay cell phone or data charges and they still didn't acknowledge my PDA would work.  I quit using it for a few years when I converted over to the Palm Treo lines but when I switched to a Blackberry for a while, I went back to my trusty Tungsten C instead of paying for the Blackberry Key Fob. I then went to the HTC Android phone and bought that fob which other than the massive size worked fine.  However, I traded it in for the Iphone one since I will probably have my Ipad with me out showing homes anyway and it is smaller than the Android fob!  Since I am the owner/broker of my company, Progressive Realty Corporation, I am able to get a second key for my brokerage, so I might go ahead and get the Android one again as a backup.

Fortunately, the EVO also works as a mobile hotspot so I can use it to power my internet connectivity on my Ipad while on the road too.  Being a road warrior real estate agent just got a lot easier!

By the way, if you are one of my local competitors reading this blog, remember, paper is better since you don't need all this new fangled technology stuff.  It's all probably just a fad anyway.  LOL

@Robert, if you already own an Ipad and use Supra for your lockbox system, call or email me and I will be glad to assist you.  All I ask in return is that if you learn something new, pay it forward as well.

You are far more techy than I!  lol  I am starting to think about an Ipad...our local MLS only runs on IE though so waiting for resolution on that.

@Cindy, what vendor and software does your MLS use?  I know LPS is currently still in Beta on their Paragon 5 product that is cross browser compatible.  I use it on IE, Chrome, Android and Safari.  They will be going live with it I think in the first quarter of 2011.

The iPad is getting more useful everyday. I got it for about 4 months and loved it. This might even be better for me since somehow I keep forgetting to charge my Supra eKey often.

@Song San, if your MLS converts over to the next generation Supra iBox that includes both bluetooth and infra red sensors, you won't even need to bring a separate key or converter.

I am still trying to implement remote access software so that I can log into my office PC.  I think I had my IT guy lock mine down to tight at my office by installing additional firewalls and port blocking software to keep hackers (evidently including myself) out. LOL  I know once I connect, I will be even able to run Windows programs via my IPAD connected to a windows PC.

Jim,

I was blessed with an iPad a couple of weeks ago.  I just decided to get back into real estate and have not yet purchase lock box key, etc.

I see the iPhone ekey is this the one I need to purchase?  I don't have the phone on my ipad either, what is the process?

Do these things work where there is no cell service?

Lots of changes since I 2006:)

@Carey, Keep in mind that this only works if your MLS uses the Supra iBox.  The reason for the attachment is that is a bluetooth to infra red converter.  Supra is testing their next generation of iBox now that will accommodate both so those lock boxes won't need this.

The process is to just go to the App Store on your iPad and download the Ekey software (free download).  If you don't have a 3G iPad, you just need to remember to update the key when you are in range of a WIFI hotspot.

Once it is updated for the day, you don't need to be hooked up to the internet or cell service to use the key.  It just won't push your showing data back to Supra until you reconnect back to the internet again.

Indeed lots of stuff has changed and we are far from stopping that trend!  The Android pads are starting to come out now and that will shake it up again.

Jim, have you been able to fill out forms online with iPad? If so how?

@Casey, I am not sure what software you use for you MLS forms, but if it isn't compatible, you can still complete the document in that program and pull it into "Sign-n-send" to finish the process including signing on the iPad without ever printing.
