The Reason we are Self Employed

By
Real Estate Attorney with Bay Vista Realty BK671311

I was in my daughters school recently.  It was a Bring your dad to school thing and while I had a full slate that day, it my schedule was somewhat easily manipulated so I could attend.

I was one of the few fathers in attendance, but all of the kids still got a moment to speak about their parents and of course what we do for a living is en-grained on their little children brains.

The first little boy spoke up and described his father, a local car dealership manager and how he sells cars to the Bucs Players, all the famous people he knows....

Here I sat as a Real Estate Broker, will the kidss even understand what I do?

The next child spoke and her father was some high powered attorney....in fact, he knew most of those same foot ball players......

Each child story became more and more grand, each father more impressive and I began to wonder what was factual....but the real truth is that I have not always "just been a REAL ESTATE BROKER" but my kids don't understand what I did in the Army, and now was not a time for a quick lesson on the ins and outs of how important I was....at one time.....

I was almost in a panic, I was worried that my daughter would be less than enthused about my current career....not impressive enough for her peers.....soon I would find out how she would handle it.

It was her turn....she stood, walked to the front of the class....raised her hand and pointed at me. ......

She said, words barely able to make it past her surprising grin....  That is my Dad and HE IS HERE!

Then she went on to  discuss how her Mom and I pick her and her siblings up at school every day, how she gets to go to the office for a few minutes, how we can always alter our schedules to "FEATURE" the kids...  How we Always have an OPEN HOUSE.... How she gets to work with me on Saturdays at the office and make money for shopping...

Never once did she mention what I did, just that WHAT I DO makes sure that they get to have us around. That is when it dawned on me again....Today is what is important and it is the kids that I need to impress...not the neighbors.

BTW....I WAS a pretty cool dude in a former life, and made some pretty important decisions.

I have a few other things going on that I dabble in as well.....

Certainly now I am just a real estate broker.....but these days much younger men are doing what I did, and probably doing it better, but no one can be a better parent to my kids than my wife and I can and that is the Reason that we are Self Employed.

Gary, What a sweet blessing for you both!  You don't need to know famous football players to be cool.  You need to be present and available and participate in their lives.  Love it!!!

Your daughter certainly made you and your wife proud of how she perceives the value of what is so very important to her and one of the benefits of being self employed.  Plus, as Real Estate Brokers a very valuable service is provided to the public by those who take the work seriously and compassionately.

I will say that I feel sorry for the kids whose dad's have been layed off and/or out of work having to get up in front of the class and say so if that's what the schools occasion was for.  Seems the school could handle bringing mom or dad to school day differently.
