our pound puppy Eleanor Rigby  If you live in Fairfax County Virginia and you are thinking about getting a cat or dog, please consider adoption.

Our last three dogs have been adopted canines and they are awesome.

Fairfax County animal shelter
Visit the Fairfax County shelter off West Ox Road near Fair Oaks mall on a regular basis and you will find the right pet for you... it might not happen in one visit.

our pound puppy Penny LaneSome of the animals you will find there are too abused for a new pet owner or one with children to handle. Usually you can spot these animals right away.

One test I use before I ask the aides to let me meet the dog, is to simply see if the animal will come up to the front of its pen to meet me with a wagging tail.

Fairfax County animal shelter hours of operationIf so, that is a very good first sign. Many dogs will stay huddled in a corner or stare indifferently or agressively...not a good sign for a successful adoption...sadly some animals have become too psychotic for most of us to handle.

This is a very good adopted dog-Penny Lane
The last two dogs we got and still have, were very neurotic from abuse, but we took them on since we are pretty experienced dog people.

Eleanor RigbyIt took one of them a year to trust us, but they are now both outstanding and entertaining pets. If you take your time and use common sense, you can get a great pet...REALLY CHEAP!

It is very affordable to adopt a pet in Fairfax County. I have seen some breeds there with dogs of good temperment that would easily cost you $700 if you purchased them from a breeder

  • Dogs- $40.00
  • Cats- $30.00
  • Rabbits/ferrets- $15.00
  • Reptiles/small birds- $10.00
  • Other (hamsters,gerbils)- $5.00
  • Equine/bovine- $200.00
  • Livestock- $20.00
  • Large birds- $100.00

  • who can resist Penny? No one.

You must pay to neuter any cat or dog you adopt...again ...a very reasonable expense.

  • Virginia State Law mandates that all dogs and cats adopted from a shelter must be spayed/neutered.
  • You are also responsible for paying 100 percent of the cost for spaying/neutering dogs and cats adopted from the shelter.
  • A deposit for surgery is taken at the time of adoption, and the balance is paid directly to the veterinarian when the pet is picked up after surgery.

Steve, I LOVE THIS POST!  I am happy to see another animal lover/activist/shelter volunteer posting about adopting!  Great job....when I volunteer I always try to spend more socializing time with the pets that dont come to the front of the cages...they need them most help, along with the older pets.  They ALL will make good pets some day if adopters are loving and patient.  Bless you for trying to help the pets!

Dear STeve and Jan: I am crying.... I get so upset when people are mean to their animals... I donate $25 from each check I receive to our local Humane Society - they do a wonderful job.... Thank you for the post. Gay

Great video...man's best friend, the furry kind just want a forever home. Just like you and me. You are not alone when you have a pet that is always, always glad to see you at the end of a day.

Steve, Great cause to promote.  We're currently dogless (and don't think Liz doesn't have a perpetual itch to fix that!), and I don't expect that to maintain.  We'll need one that can tolerate the cats and getting whacked in the face for no apparent reason (at least to us!).  We're most likely going to be hitting one of the rescue groups when it's time, whether our local pound or one of the breed specific groups.

Steve...some of the best pets are rescued pets.  They don't seam to forget what you have done for them!

Almost all of the dogs my family has ever owned have been adopted from shelters. Those poor dogs without a home, my heart goes out to them!

Kristen, There really are great dogs to be had in shelters. Many of them were bought as puppies by folks who did not know what they were in for.

Gay, the folks in animal rescue and the shelters are great. Volunteering is a good way to help and have fun.

Andy, our dogs help keep us sane. Cheap therapy and healthier than whiskey :-)

Bliz, go get a dog right now! They are more fun than cats :-)

Bill, the last three dogs we've had were rescues and they are the best we've had...they seem duly appreciative.

Pat, Unfortunately lots of dogs come in to the shelter after Christmas because people got them as gifts and did not know how to handle them. However, because of that..that's a good time to get a good pet!

Barbara-Jo, good for you! It does seem to be getting better..at least here. People are really getting into adoption mode.
