Isn't she beautiful? My Kodak Moment stars my Mother.
I have these pictures up in my house, had to call CA to go scan them in and email them to me. Out of all the wonderful pictures I have of my Mother, these 2 stand out. I was about 5 years old, which would make her about 25 at the time, and we were living in Stephens City, VA. We were just outside playing in the side yard, nothing, and everything, special about the day. Can you imagine playing in the yard dressed like that? I remember laughing so hard it hurt, and thinking my Mother was the most beautiful lady in the world. I'm not sure what she was doing in that hole, but I remember how silly she looked trying to climb out. You see, my Mom is very tall and elegant, so for her to play in the dirt was a welcome surprise. Oh, how I wanted to look like her when I grew up! I'm so glad someone caught the moments on film -- I imagine that without the photos I would have forgotten about this nothing special, very ordinary day. But with the photos? They are a snapshot of a day that was anything but ordinary. And all sorts of special.
Isn't she beautiful?
This week I am in Virginia, visiting my Mom, who was recently diagnosed with Stage IV Melanoma. She is 83 years young and still as full of life as she was when I was a kid. She has always had a wicked sense of humor and an infectious laugh, they are still very much in evidence today. My daughter, considering it the highest compliment she can give, calls her a "dame", and I think it fits.
We're having a lovely visit, just enjoying being in the same room and taking a stroll or two down memory lane. What one of us can't remember, the other can. Most times. When neither of us can remember, we just agree that whatever happened we behaved impeccably and looked darn good at the same time. This is working for us. I hope none of my siblings shows up and ruins it -- they seem to have better memories than I do! Curse of being the oldest I guess. I'm so glad I have these Kodak Moments, and truly thankful that we have the chance to make a few more!
