Many of us are busy baking this time of year, and I came across this helpful tip for brown sugar:

To keep brown sugar soft, put a piece of bread in with the sugar.  This trick will work even if the sugar is already hardened; just give the sugar a couple of days with the bread and it will soften up.

Hi Kristin, I love brown sugar.  I buy the naturally brown cane sugar.  I do think it is a light brownish color naturally and they have to bleach it out to make it white. (not healthy!!!)   Isn't brown sugar darker because they add  some molassas?

Can't even fathom why that would work but I'll try it.  I'm usually chipping away at a solid block of it it seems.  Thanks Kristin!

I'm going out on a limb here and guessing that the bread absorbs any moisture leaving the brown sugar dry and soft?

That is great info.  My daughter loves brown sugar in her oatmeal.  Our brown sugar is always hard.  Drives me crazy.  I guess I'll go break some bread!  Thanks Kristin.
